Accountabilities:

Under the supervision of the Senior Scientific Specialist SCYCLE for Statistics, the incumbent shall:

  1. Perform research on the Future availability of secondary raw materials:
    • Contribute to the research under the Horizon Europe The Future Availability of Secondary Raw Materials (FutuRaM) project by quantifying, mapping, and Characterizing the Stock and Waste Flow for secondary (with special focus on, critical) raw materials in Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment up to 2050 in the European Union and globally.
    • In particular, the construction of concepts, methods and mathematical models, data gathering, data cleaning, harmonizing, apply relevant validation, relevant modelling and gap filling methods. It includes the mass of products placed on the market, material compositions, lifespans, current stocks, and waste electronic and electronical equipment (WEEE) generation, separate (formal) collection, collection in mixed waste streams (for instance in municipal solid waste, or metal scrap), exports of used items, transboundary movement of waste, and other undocumented waste flows. This includes the resources that are present in WEEE, and actually recovered amounts. The datasets and methods developed in the  ProSUM | Prospecting Secondary raw materials in the Urban mine and Mining wastes (prosumproject.eu) Project will be extended to new products likely to enter the market post 2022 and phase out existing products in the various scenarios and adapted where needed.
    • Coordinate the input and build conceptual interrelations with the other waste streams in the project (Waste batteries, End-of-Life Vehicles; Mining waste; Slags and Ashes; and Construction and Demolition Waste).
    • Contribute and align to the conceptual development of the FutuRaM project which includes reporting structures, and data gathering, validation, modelling of data gaps to improve the raw materials knowledge base on secondary raw materials, with a focus on critical raw materials, and contribute to drafting a proposal on EU statistics on secondary raw materials.
    • Contribute to the environmental and socioeconomic impacts and bottlenecks of future secondary raw materials recovery.
    • Contribute to the dissemination and exploitation of project outcomes via a systematic and transparent Secondary Raw Materials Knowledge Base, which enables fact-based decision making in the EU and third countries .
  2. Support project management by:
    • Leading the work package on quantifying, mapping, and Characterizing the secondary (including critical) in  the Stock and Waste Flows.
    • Work on day-to-day basis with the other UNITAR project members, and reporting overall progress to the Scientific coordinator of the project, who is inter-alia Senior Scientific Specialist Statistics with SCYCLE.
    • Contribute to any other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

The Incumbent’s work implies frequent Interaction with the following actors such as the project partners in the FutuRaM project, other researchers, representatives of statistical organizations, governmental representatives etc. which may, at times, require more than routine exchanges in order to clarify administrative procedures: 

  • Represents the Organization at international meetings and conferences, identifies and implements strategic partnerships;
  • Leads research meetings relates in the project;
  • The incumbent will provide technical advice and assistance to program partners as required.
Results Expected:

The incumbent will be expected to affect the overall execution of the FutuRaM project and teams' reputation and success with functions cover the following: 

  • Perform research, and contribute to the successful delivery of datasets, writing of deliverables for the The Future Availability of Secondary Raw Materials project;
  • Professional participation and effective coordination with technical teams, including coordination with internal and external researchers and stakeholders;
  • Team management for quality and delivery of results;
  • Contribute to the management of subordinates in the project implementation, monitoring and assessment;
  • Contribute to outreach activities; such as, seminars, etc.

Minimum requirements

Education - Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in one or more of the following: environment, chemistry, industrial ecology, chemistry, data science, environmental engineering, or other equivalent related technical field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the research area of environment, sustainable consumption and production, statistics, of waste and e-waste and any other relevant fields
  • A minimum of three years of working experience in the area of material flow accounting or mass balances at global, regional or national level
  • Experience in research project implementation and planning is required
  • Proficiency in data processing and programming is required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required
  • Experience in projections is desirable
  • Experience in the area of and/or the management of WEEE is desirable
  • Experience in writing of project deliverables is desirable

Language Skills - Proficiency in English is required
