Overview:

UNITAR’s Green Development and Climate Change Programme Unit (GCP) develops the capacities of individuals and training institutions in developing countries to advance green and climate resilient development. Activities are carried out through partnerships with other UN organizations, bilateral development partners, as well as leading learning institutions and think tanks. The Programme is a founding member of the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) (www.un-page.org) a one-UN initiative that supports countries in putting sustainability at the heart of economic and policy planning. UNITAR is coordinating the implementation of aspects of PAGE global work in the area of learning and communication.

To increase the visibility of substantive findings, policy recommendations, and evidence of impact produced by the Partnership, PAGE is launching a media campaign through relevant global media channels with established voice in economic policy debate. Outreach is to be multiplied through social media. The target audience for the media campaign are professionals involved in economic policy, including government officials, business leaders, and academics. 

The campaign aims to mobilize a group of thought leaders on behalf of PAGE (e.g. experts from PAGE agencies, PAGE partners, and PAGE donor countries) that could reflect and amplify PAGE findings and raise their visibility. The media products will be oriented around key outputs and events in the period Q3 2022 to Q3 2023, leveraging PAGE’s participation in various global green economy debate.

General objectives of the contract:

The Media Consultant will support strategic communication and outreach to global media outlets to increase the visibility of PAGE green economic transformation work under the supervision of UNITAR and in close collaboration with the PAGE Secretariat.

Responsibilities/description of professional services:
  1. Preparation of PAGE Green Economic Transformation media campaign

    • Setup of tentative calendar of news releases by PAGE in collaboration with UNITAR, the PAGE Secretariat coms team and the PAGE editorial team;
    • Compile a list of media vehicle with regional or global outreach;
    • Mapping and liaison with news desks editors and media professionals;
    • Compilation of though leaders’ group (with input from PAGE editorial team).
  1. Coordinate the execution of PAGE Green Economic Transformation media campaign

    • Regular coordination with PAGE Secretariat and editorial team to select, define, confirm themes and sub-themes;
    • Liaise with economics thought leaders within the PAGE agencies, the Green Team, country representatives, to ensure buy-in, pull content and opinions;
    • Production (drafting) of op-eds and news features (print) as well key talking points for assigned interviewees (broadcasting), in collaboration with PAGE editorial team;
    • Pitch PAGE news pitch and ensure publishing by selected media vehicles;
    • Support promotion through social media of the media piece and relates stories/facts (via PAGE and agencies channels, PAGE thought leaders group, and partners organizations such as GGKP, GEC, GGGI) in collaboration with the PAGE Secretariat coms team;
    • Monitoring and reporting of results.

 

Reporting structure:

The incumbent will report to the Associate Programme Officer, Green Development and Climate Change Programme Unit, Division for Planet.

Minimum requirements

Education

  • University degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in a field relevant to journalism, public relations, media relations, communication.

b. Work experience

  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience, with proven experience in the area of public relations, broadcasting, and communications.
  • Proven experience working with global media outlets.
  • Documented experience in coordinating complex media campaigns.

c. Core competencies

  • Ability to identify interesting and relevant pieces of information and turn them into engaging stories (storytelling).
  • Ability to coordinate work with multiple partners in a dynamic international environment.
  • Ability to plan own work, observe deadlines and manage multiple communication workstreams.
  • Very good inter-personal skills and demonstrated capacity to deal with colleagues and counterparts from different backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to articulate ideas in a clear and concise style, and produce different media products (op eds, social media blurbs, talking points, etc).
  • Integrity and commitment to the mandate and values ​​of the United Nations.

d. Languages

  • Fluency in both English is required (oral and written).

Incumbents are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local laws. UNITAR does not reimburse for any taxes, duty, or other contribution payable by the Consultants on payments made under the contract.

The Institute does not provide or arrange life or health insurance coverage for Consultants, and Consultants are not eligible to participate in the life and health insurance schemes provided by the UN for its staff members.
