Programme Description:

Within the framework of UNITAR, the Division for Peace supports the establishment of peaceful, just and inclusive societies through enabling individuals, institutions and organisations to contribute meaningfully to sustainable peace. The Division provides a range of capacity-building solutions, including but not limited to training and facilitation; coaching and mentoring; e-learning; online courses and academic programmes, advocacy, and advisory. The Division's thematic portfolio includes such areas as peace operations; Peace-Making and Conflict Prevention; Counterterrorism and Preventing/Countering Violent Extremism; Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration; Weapons and Ammunition Management; Youth, Peace and Security; Women, Peace and Security; Rule of Law and others.

Learning Solutions is a team of learning specialists, trainers, instructional designers, and innovators supporting the implementation of training and capacity building projects of UNITAR's Division for Peace. The Learning Solutions team focuses on creating high quality, needs-based, creative and innovative learning solutions for our beneficiaries, including military, police officers, justice sector professionals, young changemakers, humanitarian workers, senior-level peacebuilders and local community leaders.

General objectives of the contract:

The Division for Peace is seeking a qualified instructional designer/E-Learning developer with fluency in both English and Arabic languages to support the adaptation of an online course into Arabic.

Responsibilities/description of professional services:

In collaboration with the Learning Solutions team, the instructional designer will be involved in alignment of the content, design and branding of an Arabic online course to an English online course on the same subject, using Articulate Rise and Storyline. This includes the following:

  • Study the Arabic and the English Articulate Rise courses and identify the differences between the two of them.
  • Make changes to the Arabic online course so that it is aligned with the English online course in terms of branding and content (text, case studies, examples, images, etc.).
  • Translate and adapt alt-text of uploaded images.
  • Proofread the content in the Arabic Rise course and in the Arabic Storyline blocks.
  • Re-design activities and Storyline blocks to ensure a smooth learning experience for Arabic-speaking learners.
  • Set up a Moodle course page in Arabic, including welcoming text and upload of SCORM packages.
  • Translate and adapt the final quiz (built in Moodle) from English to Arabic.
  • Translate certificate from English to Arabic.
  • Upload certificate to Moodle.
  • Keep track of the changes developed into the Arabic course.
  • Independent coordination and management of the timeline and deadline.
Measurable outputs/deliverables/schedule of deliverables:
  • UNITAR Online Training of Trainers course in Arabic is finalized and it is up and running in Moodle, ready to enrol participants.
  • Submission of a folder with all learning and media documents organized.
Performance indicators for evaluation of results:

Timely and quality submission of deliverables; activities implemented with a high degree of effectiveness and efficiency; demonstrating a high degree of professionalism of the consultant and contributing to an increase in the professional image of the Institute.

Technical Competencies:  Has an excellent understanding of how adults learn; is able to apply a thorough design methodology from needs assessments to evaluation; has an excellent understanding on how to change behaviour / improve performance; is able to design eLearning courses that are tailored to the learners’ needs;

Situational competencies: Able to provide culture-specific deliverables that consider the local context and culture; demonstrates flexibility and adaptability; demonstrate creativity and orientation towards solutions.

Interpersonal competencies: Able to communicate and interact effectively with all stakeholders; is able to work both independently and as part of a team; is able to work under pressure and with limited resources; demonstrates high level of discipline.

Reflective competencies: has awareness of his/her strengths and weaknesses as an instructional designer and is accustomed to self-reflection on his/her practice; has a strong motivation to develop as a learning specialist who can quickly learn and apply the approach of the Division on training and capacity-building for current and future projects; values continuous learning and professional growth.

Minimum requirements

Education: University Degree in one of the following fields: adult learning, instructional design, learning management, educational technology, or any other relevant field.

Experience: At least 2 years of experience in the field of instructional design and eLearning development, including:

  • Creation of self-paced courses from needs analysis to evaluation
  • Creation of courses with Articulate Rise and Storyline (or other similar authoring tools)
  • Creation of learning media for online courses.
  • Creation and setup of courses in Moodle

Experience with work experience with UN or other international/donor agencies is an asset.

Additional desirable competencies: Has a good to excellent understanding of one or several thematic fields related to peacekeeping, peace-making or peacebuilding.

Languages Requirement: Fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is mandatory; working level of other languages is an asset.

Other: Knowledge of basic gender and inclusivity concepts; Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) are required; Proficiency in graphic design.
