A training event where all aspects are defined by you in consultation with the training partners. This includes the choice of subjects, duration, location, training language and the target group.

Primarily for any governmental, administrative or judicial entity of UN Member States. Customized training can also be organized for regional groups of countries, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, self-governing territories and, subject to approval from the United Nations Staff College, organizations of the UN system.

Primarily in international relations and skills development in diplomacy. Courses can be constructed by combining existing training modules or a totally new topic can be developed, as long as it broadly falls into one of the categories above.

Training activities organized at the request of UN Member States or organizations are financed entirely through extra-budgetary sources. In most cases, the activity is funded either entirely or partially by a bilateral or multilateral donor agency in the form of a special purpose grant and Member States or organizations requesting the training contribute in-kind, such as providing training facilities and covering logistical/hospitality expenses for the participants. In some cases, costs may even be shared with neighbouring countries by organizing the training activity at the sub-regional or regional level.

There is no need to wait until the full project budget has been secured before contacting UNITAR. While it remains the responsibility of the requesting entity to secure full funding, UNITAR is often able to assist in the fundraising process. When submitting a request, it is thus important to identify possible sources of funding and indicate if contact has already been made.

• Content development, including expertise to develop, revise, or customize pedagogical material to the needs of the requesting Member State or organization
• Assessment of training needs of the targeted beneficiaries
• Facilitation and supervision expertise during the implementation of the activity
• General programme development costs covering the time needed to prepare and implement the training activity
• Travel and accommodation of experts, UNITAR staff (and participants for regional/sub-regional activities)
• Purchase and reproduction of training material and supplies
• Communication and shipment of training material
• Evaluation and reporting

A typical course would last between one and three weeks, cover three to ten topics under one common theme, reach twenty to forty participants and consist of training modules that are between half a day and three days long. Teaching is normally of the interactive type with frequent discussions, exercises, role-plays, case studies and the use of audio-visual aids.

UNITAR has acquired three decades of experience in this field. As an integral part of the UN system, UNITAR is closer to new trends and developments in multilateral diplomacy and international affairs than any other institution. UNITAR monitors these developments closely and incorporates them into its training programs. Moreover, many experienced diplomats and senior UN officials act as part-time trainers for UNITAR courses. They are themselves at the center of "real-world" diplomacy, and their knowledge and practical experience are passed on the trainees.
