The Online Certificate on Women’s Leadership equips participants with practical skills to thrive and excel in leadership roles. The programme nurtures self-confidence, sharpens communication abilities, and creates opportunities for mentorship and peer exchange.

It also addresses the persistent challenge of gender stereotypes by providing a platform to deconstruct barriers and engage stakeholders in advancing gender equality. Participants are empowered to strengthen their leadership potential, enhance their public presence, and navigate self-doubt and societal expectations.

Designed for professional women across sectors, community leaders, and aspiring leaders, the training combines personal development with a gender lens on workplace and societal challenges. Its holistic approach ensures long-term impact through interactive workshops, applied learning, and active networking.

About the Programme

Training and capacity-building are essential to converting ambition and commitments into measurable and impactful change. Since 2015, UNITAR has worked with partners across the UN system to support the achievement of gender parity targets and promote women’s full and effective participation in decision-making processes.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.5 on inclusive decision-making, the Women’s Leadership Programme addresses gender imbalances at senior levels, including in multilateral negotiations and decision-making in both public and private sectors.

Today, the Women’s Leadership Programme continues to deliver training and awareness-raising activities worldwide, building skills, providing coaching and mentorship opportunities, and organising high-level events to achieve transformative impact.

Since its launch in May 2015, the programme has organised workshops in Geneva for female delegates to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Congress and the Radiocommunication Assembly/World Radiocommunication Conference. It has also delivered open workshops for women from Geneva’s international community and sessions in New York for female delegates to the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

UNITAR is further strengthening its global support through the 4-day e-workshop “Women’s Leadership: Make Your Voice Heard.”

This training equips women with practical tools and knowledge to succeed and excel in leadership roles. It fosters self-confidence, strengthens assertive communication, and encourages valuable mentorship connections. The skills developed are pragmatic and directly applicable to real-world professional contexts.

By the end of this online certificate, participants will be able to:

  • Apply diverse leadership styles and strategies in both personal and professional contexts.
  • Strengthen cultural intelligence to foster inclusion and diversity in leadership roles.
  • Build self-confidence, assertive communication, negotiation skills, and professional networks through mentorship.
  • Gain practical tools to challenge gender stereotypes and engage stakeholders in advancing equality while leveraging authentic strengths for effective leadership.

Since 2020:

  • Around 300 women have strengthened their leadership, public speaking, and mentoring skills
  • Small cohorts of approximately 25 participants enable personalised learning and peer exchange
  • Participants develop their own leadership styles and maximise their unique strengths

With the support of the Government of India, UNITAR expanded its reach:

  • 150+ women from 36 countries trained online on gender, leadership, and mentoring

The online training is designed for professionals seeking to integrate gender-inclusive leadership practices across all sectors, community leaders and activists, and anyone currently in or aspiring to leadership roles.

The holistic training approach focuses on personal growth while providing tools to better understand and address gender-specific obstacles in the workplace, marketplace, and community. It aims for significant long-term impact at both the individual and organisational level through synchronous learning during the e-workshops and active networking.
