2021年7月16日・広島 ― 400mハードル日本記録をもつ、元陸上選手の為末大さんが、国連ユニタール親善大使に就任しました。14日にオンラインで開催された記者会見で、「アジアの選手たちへのトレーニングを行いながら各国の選手の友好を広げる活動を行っていたので、ユニタールの活動に共感しました。ユニタールの活動をみなさんに知っていただきたい」と抱負を語りました。
為末さんは、スプリント種目の世界大会で日本人として初めてメダルを獲得し、シドニー・アテネ・北京と3度のオリンピックに日本代表として出場しました。2001年に男子400メートルハードルで日本記録を樹立され、2021年7月現在もその記録は破られていません。
広島市出身で、被爆三世でもあり、これまで様々な方法で世界中に平和や持続可能な社会のための対話を呼び掛けてもきました。現在は執筆活動や会社経営に取り組んでおり、新豊洲Brilliaランニングスタジアムの館長としてパラスポーツの推進にも尽力。東日本大震災発生後には積極的にスポーツ界に被災地支援を呼び掛けたほか、国際レベルのコーチが少ない発展途上国で、国際競技力向上の支援も行ってきました。
