私たちは津波というものをまったく知らず、ただの大きな波だと思っていました。そして、ことの成り行きをただ見守っていたのです。海水が外海に引いていくと、環礁が見えるようになりました。まもなく、大津波が押し寄せ、死んだ魚やすべてのものが運ばれてきました。まったく津波に警戒していなかったのです。
インド洋大津波の発生は、Sonathさんの人生の中できわめて重要な瞬間でした。その後、Sonathさんは母国の救援のためにボランティア活動を始めました。そして、防災管理分野でのキャリアをスタートさせました。このキャリアパスが最終的に、Sonathさんを国連ユニタールの津波防災に関する女性のリーダーシップ研修への参加と来日に導きました。, モルディブ共和国は、世界で最も低地にある小島嶼開発途上国であり、地表からの平均の高さは海抜わずか1.5メートルです。気候変動と海面上昇により、島全体は以前より大きな海面のうねり、強風、豪雨にさらされています。災害への備えは、国の存続や人々の生存のために不可欠です。
