2021年5月31日・広島 - 国連ユニタール持続可能な繁栄局諮問委員で一般社団法人国連ユニタール協会理事長の大島賢三氏ご逝去の報に接し、心から哀悼の意を表します。
大島氏には、ご出身の広島市に拠点をもつ国連ユニタール広島事務所を数年来応援していただき、様々な面から助言をいただいてきました。2019年からはユニタール協会理事長としてユニタールの資金調達や広報に関するアウトリーチの分野でもご協力いただいており、今年新たにご就任いただいた持続可能な繁栄局諮問委員としてますます弊所の活動に携わっていただこうとしていたところでした。公開セッションでたびたびご登壇いただくなど、地域の皆様や若手との交流にも心を砕いてこられました。
日本国外務省にて、国際連合事務次長(人道問題担当)や国連大使など要職を歴任され、退官後は国際協力機構(JICA)副理事長、福島原発事故・国会事故調査委員会委員、広島大学長特任補佐などを経て、アフリカ協会理事長、ロヒンギャ問題に関するミャンマー政府独立調査委員会委員などを務めてこられた大島氏。ニキル・セス国連ユニタール総代表は、次のように述べています。
