We organize several longer-duration Fellowship Programmes with the support from key donors. In the fields of peacemaking, conflict prevention and post conflict reconstruction, two Programmes are held annually:

Fellowship Programme in Peacemaking and Preventive Diplomacy

Now in its twenty-fifth year, this advanced two-week annual training programme in conflict analysis, negotiation, mediation and reconciliation was the first of its kind in the UN system. It is also unique in bringing together mid and senior level diplomats, with UN and regional organization staff--key institutions responsible for the prevention and sustainable resolution of conflict--to share perspectives, experience and practice while strengthening vital capacities. Former heads of peace missions and senior academics and practitioners serve as resource persons in the programme. Co-sponsored with the International Peace Institute in New York, this programme is held in Norway.

Regional Training Programme to Enhance Conflict Prevention and Peacemaking

Building upon the flagship UNITAR-IPI Fellowship Programme in Peacemaking and Preventive Diplomacy now in its 25th year, requested regional training programmes are tailored and conducted since 2000 for the Africa Region, and since 2016 for the Asia-Pacific Region:

Regional Training Programme to Enhance Conflict Prevention and Peacemaking in Africa

This two-week advanced training programme is organized annually in Addis Ababa to deepen the knowledge and strengthen the skills of senior and mid-level diplomats from Offices of Presidents and Prime Ministers, from MFAs, regional and sub-regional organizations and peace missions on the continent in conflict analysis, negotiation, mediation and reconciliation.

Training Programme in Peacemaking and Preventive Diplomacy for the Asia-Pacific Region

Designed for senior and mid-level diplomats, regional organization staff and key representatives of civil society, this programme enhances capacities in conflict analysis, negotiation and preventive diplomacy in the region. The programmes are organized in collaboration with the UN Department of Political Affairs and contribute as well to the ASEAN-UN Plan of Action as announced by the UN Secretary-General.

Afghanistan Fellowship Programme

Launched in 2003, this annual post-conflict training programme builds the capacity and enhances the leadership, management, and professional skills of a core group of senior government officials, academics and practitioners from Afghanistan. Sharing Hiroshima’s lessons in post-conflict reconstruction, the Fellowship has, for 15 years, explored themes important to the effective governance of Afghanistan for, and by, Afghan nationals themselves.

The UNITAR Iraq Fellowship Programme: Entrepreneurship and Leadership Youth Training is a six-month-long programme that focuses on project implementation and development, aiming to build the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for effective project management and leadership for 24 junior-mid level professionals from public and private sectors, civil society organizations, and academic institutions in Iraq. Participants, known as Fellows, are trained to be able to identify local needs and national priorities and successfully design and implement projects to address them in ways that will help shape their nation’s path toward sustainable recovery and development. A special emphasis is placed on methodology and skills development related to leadership and mentoring. The Programme aims to develop the capacity of each individual Fellow to be a leader, able to contribute to organizational change within their respective ministry, organization, or business.
