Background

CIFAL York is positioned to help achieve the UN’s sustainable development goals around emergency and disaster management, diversity and inclusion, economic development, health, and entrepreneurship. The centre is a catalyst for positive change and extend York’s global reach that already includes more than 300 university, industry, and NGO partners in over 70 countries.

In addition, CIFAL York provides a platform for dialogue and a forum for the development of new ideas by providing public servants, decision-makers, and academics in the Western Hemisphere learning opportunities that facilitate knowledge sharing and improve decision-making processes.

CIFAL York is one of 22 training centres for government authorities around the world and will facilitate face-to-face or online training activities such as seminars, courses, national, and international events. It will also seek to empower local, regional, and international authorities to promote intersectoral partnership and cooperation and improve the well-being of their citizens. Since its inception in 2003, the CIFAL network has reached more than 30,000 beneficiaries through over 400 learning events.

The Dutch water experts played games to increase innovation and strengthen their relationships for the Room for the River project. Come join in the Flood Resilience Challenge (FRC) game (frcgame.com) designed for the Canadian context on Nov. 6 in Cambridge, Ontario.

Event objectives

Partners for Action and researchers at York University are bringing together the business community, local government, and other community leaders in Cambridge to play the Flood Resilience Challenge Game (FRC), a scenario-based serious game designed to build the capacity of stakeholders to improve flood resilience and enhance flood risk governance. In the FRC game, players take on various stakeholder roles and plan for different types of flooding, communicate with one another about flood risk management measures, and then re-evaluate their past decisions and make future flood management plans.

Content and Structure

There is a voluntary research component to the FRC game to measure the effectiveness of the game. Participation consists of a Consent Form; Pre-Game Survey (15-20 min.); Debrief for sharing your game playing experience with other players (30 min.); and Post-Game Survey (15-20 min.). The data is needed to improve, further develop, and make the game accessible to more people. If you want to contribute to the research, please click on this link for the Recruitment Poster which will provide the link for the Consent Form. This research follows Research Board Ethics requirements, so apologies in advance for the length of the form.

Targeted audience

Students and stakeholders in disaster management.
