The Nigeria Project Office (NPO), a part of Division for People, was established on 23 March 2006 as a field office in Nigeria. Operating in collaboration with federal, state and local authorities, NPO implements various training and capacity building activities. The initial concept of NPO was based on two principles; close cooperation with regional governments, local authorities and elected municipalities on the one hand, and strong, transparent public-private partnerships on the other.

Since the inauguration of the NPO, its capacity building activities are focused on the following:

• Conflict Resolution and Management

  • Alternative dispute resolution
  • Emerging issues in the Gulf of Guinea countries
  • Conflict prevention and peace-building in the Gulf of Guinea
  • Practical approach to disarmament and demobilization in post-conflict situations

• Environmental Protection

  • Environmental profiles
  • Health, safety and environment, and quality maintenance management, capacity building
  • Climate change capacity building for the Gulf of Guinea countries

• Local Economic Development

  • Training on micro-finance and practical approach to programme implementation
  • Business skills and management training
  • Specific capacity development in oil and gas sectors to broaden scope of local participation in the sectors
  • UNOSAT satellite solutions to decision making

• Local Governance and Development

  • Governance and leadership for local government officers
  • Public administration and management for local authorities

• Capacity Building for Community Development Associations

In collaboration with federal, state, local authorities and private sector organizations, NPO has established a Training and Capacity Building Programme for Sustainable Development. Based on an analysis of the disparity in skills in the Niger Delta, a youth vocational technical training programme has been launched to fulfill the identified needs. The training ensures a specialized and skilled young workforce needed for the oil and gas industry in the Niger Delta and the West African sub-region.
