12 February, 2021, Hiroshima, Japan – Mr. Baraa Hameed Salman, an alumnus of UNITAR Division of Prosperity’s Innovation for Growth: Inspiring Youth Entrepreneurs and Leaders in Iraq, has been selected as a Regional Ambassador for the Global Startup Resource (GSR) Index. As an initiative of US-based IEEE Entrepreneurship, the Index provides valuable resource and networking opportunities for entrepreneurial engineers. 

During his training with UNITAR, Mr. Baraa developed the business plan for Oil4Water, a facility designed to treat the large quantities of salty water found in Iraq’s Basra oil fields for drinking and irrigation purposes. On the strength of his business model, Baraa was also selected to serve as a coach for Fundaments of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, which builds on the previous programme and expanded to include youth from the Horn of Africa. It will complete in March 2021.

Part of UNITAR Prosperity’s Entrepreneurship and Private Sector Development trainings, Fundaments of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme challenges participants to target real-life problems and develop complementary solutions, supported by sector specialists and small group coaching. Leveraging the micro-learning platform EdApp, the programme, fifth offering, provides practical skills and insights in social entrepreneurship for more than 350 motivated young professionals from Ethiopia, Iraq, Kenya, Somalia, and Sudan.

The Fundaments of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme is generously funded by the People and Government of Japan, with an aim to drive social, environmental, and economic progress and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
