25 November 2025, Merida, Mexico – The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Merida (CIFAL Merida), an affiliated training centre of UNITAR, hosted by the airport group ASUR. Joined the international observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a United Nations initiative aimed at raising awareness, strengthening prevention efforts, and eliminating all forms of gender-based violence.
To mark the day, the airport illuminated its main façade and surrounding green areas in orange, the official colour of UN Women’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign. This initiative forms part of the global 16 Days of Activism, observed from 25 November to 10 December, during which institutions, governments, the private sector, and civil society advocate for safe, inclusive, and violence-free environments for women and girls.
The orange lighting stands as a visible expression of a shared commitment to a future free from violence. It symbolises hope, solidarity, and collective responsibility in advancing gender equality and promoting human rights.
Mr Hector Navarrete, Director of CIFAL Merida and Director of the Regional Airport at ASUR, underscored the significance of the action and its contribution to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development:
Merida International Airport joins this global call with responsibility and conviction. Through ASUR and CIFAL Merida, we promote awareness-raising, training and a culture of peace that contribute to SDG 5 on gender equality and SDG 16 on peaceful and inclusive societies. Ending violence against women is a shared task, and every action taken within the airport community helps build a safer and more dignified future.
This initiative reflects the shared values of the CIFAL Global Network and its ongoing efforts to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through awareness-raising, training, and action that contribute to societies free from violence and discrimination.
