27 April 2021, Geneva, Switzerland - The current pandemic increased the importance of well-developed negotiation, mediation, and leadership skills for successful crisis management. Critically analysing political, historical, and economic factors is key to understand complex problems and to solve disputes effectively. Therefore, UNITAR and The Ambassador Partnership decided to cooperate to empower growth-oriented professionals working in bi- and multilateral diplomacy, as well as current and future policy leaders. Following the signing of a Letter of Agreement, UNITAR and The Ambassador Partnership joined their efforts to launch the Executive Online Certificate on Dispute Resolution. The innovative online training aims at equipping participants with the necessary negotiation, leadership, and crisis management skills to effectively overcome challenges these times of increased uncertainty.

Partnership Objective: Assist the capacity development of individuals to significantly strengthen their professional skills in dispute resolution.

This online training will help individuals to better structure their own approach to conflict resolution, to build resilience, and to be self-motivated during these challenging times. By examining the essential professional qualities needed to sustain the world of multilateral diplomacy, the online training will enable participants to further improve their professional skills in negotiation, mediation, leadership, and crisis management, among others.

The course aims at improving participants’ analytical and interpersonal skills while increasing the awareness of their individual strengths to ultimately help them develop a personal approach to effective dispute resolution. By providing direct feedback, participants will be enabled to make immediate adjustments and improvements at a behavioral level. Therefore, the online course will also equip participants with the practical skillset to implement and improve effective dispute resolution techniques.

Learning Objectives

When receiving the Executive Online Certificate on Dispute Resolution, participants will be able to:

  • Analyse complex problems and disputes taking into account the impact of history, politics and economics;
  • Develop and apply essential principles of the art of negotiation and mediation;
  • Identify characteristics of effective meetings and know one’s personal strengths and weaknesses in meeting skills;
  • Familiarise with different approaches to leadership and develop a leadership style in line with one’s personality and work environment;
  • Implement acquired tools for dispute resolution and adequate negotiation techniques in times of increased uncertainty.

Content and Structure

The online training will take place over a period of five weeks from 1 June to 1 July 2021. There will be two 4-hour online sessions per week on Tuesday and Thursday from 12:00 – 16:00 GMT+1/UTC+1. The training will consist of lectures and facilitated discussions by senior experts and practitioners in the field, as well as simulation exercises, role plays and case studies. There will be ample opportunities for group discussions and sharing of experience under the guidance of the facilitators.
