Programme Description:

The Peacekeeping Training Programme Unit (PTPU) is part of UNITAR’s Division for Peace. The Unit contributes to the international community’s efforts towards the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the building of lasting peace. Recognising that peace is a prerequisite for the achievement of the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, PTPU supports the development of capacities in the areas of peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and crisis management. Through innovative and results-oriented approaches, the Programme Unit strengthens knowledge and skills of individuals, groups, and institutions.

In line with its support to the African Union, UNITAR is looking for Individual Contractor to support the DRC Presidency of the AU for an initial duration of 6 months from September 2021 to February 2022.

Accountabilities:

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Director, Division for Peace, the incumbent will assist and support Mission DRC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the coordination of daily AU operations and implementations of AU’s objectives and goals in delivering the continental vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.

Responsibilities include:

  • Translate official documents and official communication in both English and French;
  • Interpret from English to French and vice-versa during meetings/conferences;
  • Welcome and see-off Elected Officials and guests and assist delegates at the airport on their arrival and departure during AU-Meetings;
  • Perform and follow up other duties of ceremonial nature, i.e. official cocktails, receptions, luncheons and distribute invitation for official functions;
  • Assist staff members with logistics needs required for events planning;
  • Assist in the preparation of routine correspondence and review correspondence for proper internal clearances;
  • Perform any other duties which may be assigned by his/her supervisor.
Work implies frequent interaction with:
  • Team members in the DRC Embassy in Addis Ababa;
  • Officials in national governments and international organizations, most notably at the AU;
  • Colleagues within UNITAR;
  • Local organizations.

Good computer skills; proficiency in using advanced functions on standard computer applications, e-mail and calendar functions, word processing, spreadsheets, Internet desktop publishing, slide preparation, and other software applications, etc.);

Teamwork – Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity. Identifies conflicts and addresses them proactively acknowledging different feelings and views and directing energy towards a mutually acceptable solution. Performance Indicators for evaluation of results:

Timely and quality submission of deliverables; activities implemented with a high degree of effectiveness and efficiency; excellent coordination with team members is ensured throughout the duration of this contract.

Minimum requirements

Experience: A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years relevant work experience, in translation and protocol assistance in a public relations setting, preferably in an international organization. Good knowledge and practical use of computer is mandatory. Good communication, drafting and coordination skills.

Education:  Bachelors’ Degree in administration, communication, literature or related field of study. Higher relevant academic qualifications in Public or International Relations/Diplomacy will be an added advantage.

Language: Highly Proficient and Skilled in French, Amharic and English (Mandatory). Knowledge of other AU working languages would be an added advantage.

Remarks:

While the position holder should expect that they would work sometime remotely from home and mostly in Addis Ababa Office indicated by the organization. Thus, the position holder should be fully set up to work via telework but also expect to work at the Addis Ababa Office. Priority will be given to Congolese nationals residing in Ethiopia. While this position is for a 6-month contract (from September 2021 to February 2022) there is the possibility of extension.
