As the world embraces profound global transformation, UNITAR and the Division for Multilateral Diplomacy stand at the forefront of leveraging innovative technologies to address global challenges and foster multilateral collaboration, in line with the Pact for the Future. Our initiatives in Artificial Intelligence (AI) embody the Pact's commitment to responsible science, technology, and innovation for the benefit of humanity and the planet.

Key initiatives on AI include:

  • AI Briefings for the Diplomatic Community: Specialized briefings designed to equip diplomats, UN Member States officials, and personnel of International Organizations with essential knowledge to address AI's challenges and opportunities in multilateral settings. Throughout 2024, we have held three AI Briefings on: a) Introduction to GenAI, b) AI and Diplomacy, and c) AI and Education having trained and delivered certificates to more than 200 decision-makers from the diplomatic community in Geneva, officials of UN Member States and International Organizations, as well as diplomatic academies and ministries of foreign affairs around the world. The briefings align with the Pact’s call to strengthen international cooperation and multilateralism. By providing practical knowledge and tools, they enhance the capacity of decision-makers to advocate for ethical and inclusive AI.
  • Artificial Intelligence and International Affairs (AI/IA) Bulletin: A monthly resource delivering insights on the intersection of AI and global diplomacy, aiding policymakers in navigating emerging technological landscapes. By increasing awareness and understanding of emerging technologies, the bulletin supports the Pact’s goal of equitable access to technology and information.
  • Online Certificate on Artificial Intelligence and Professional Skills: This fully online programme reached even the most remote participants, ensuring no one is left behind. Fellowships were awarded to exceptional candidates from Least Developed Countries (LDCs), enabling equitable participation and contributing to the global goal of increasing AI literacy globally. This initiative successfully reskilled and upskilled professionals from diverse sectors and regions, strengthening their ability to navigate the evolving AI landscape. These initiatives reflect our dedication to advancing responsible and equitable international governance of AI, as emphasized in the Pact. They also aim to build the capacities of all Member States, particularly those most in need, ensuring no one is left behind in the digital age.
  • AI Forum held in partnership with IE University: A global platform fostering dialogue and collaboration among experts, policymakers, and practitioners to explore AI's transformative potential in diplomacy and governance. This initiative directly supports the Pact’s commitment to leveraging science, technology, and innovation for humanity’s benefit. By fostering dialogue on responsible AI governance, the forum helped ensure that these technologies advance sustainable development, human rights, and ethical multilateralism.

Looking ahead to 2025, we plan to expand its offerings with customized training programmes tailored to beneficiary needs. These programs will address diverse topics, including responsible AI governance, ethical frameworks, and AI's applications in addressing global challenges.

Our AI initiatives contribute to a future where science and technology serve as enablers of peace, sustainability, and inclusion. By fostering dialogue, providing knowledge resources, and building capacity, we support the goals outlined in the Pact for the Future—empowering global actors to harness AI responsibly for the benefit of humanity and the planet.
