Our Mission

The Division for People and Social Inclusion at UNITAR has been working on anticorruption issues since 2019.

From 2019 to 2022, we joined efforts with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre (ROLACC) to develop capacity building initiatives for supporting the fight against corruption. 3692 persons from more than 150 countries and different sectors, received access to these learning initiatives.

Since 2023, we have been working with the Global Organization of Parliamentarians against Corruption (GOPAC). Strengthening parliamentarians' work on anti-corruption through capacity building is crucial because of their role in the adoption of laws and the public budget, as well as the oversight of Governments’ laws, policies, and the implementation of recommendations coming from the ratification of international treaties.

Background

Corruption hinders people’s welfare in all countries - regardless of their stage of development. At the international level, there is a common agreement on the need of suppressing and preventing corruption due to its negative impacts and ripple effects for Human Rights and sustainable development, including participation, equitable distribution of resources, employment, leadership, and decision-making at all levels, among other repercussions.

In order to tackle its root causes and consequences, as well as to find solutions for prevention, accountability, and redress, the impact of mainstreaming knowledge is a powerful tool for upholding the rule of law, while overcoming discriminatory social institutions, laws, cultural norms, and community practices for transforming the lives of individuals and societies.

It pursues the change of discriminatory social institutions, laws, cultural norms, and community practices. Therefore, the creation of spaces and initiatives to raise awareness and to build knowledge, like the following ones, represents an opportunity to enhance capabilities towards a culture of learning.
