First declared a national holiday in 1917 Russia, it wasn’t until 1977 that 8 March was formally adopted by the United Nations, launching the global celebration we know today. The UNOSAT Emergency Mapping Service (UNOSAT-EMS) is a 24/7 service that provides satellite imagery analysis support following rapid on-set disasters, complex emergencies, and crises. The Service is free of charge for the emergency phase of the response. The UNOSAT-EMS was established in 2003 funded in the last three project cycles by Norway through Norad (Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The current phase of the project receives funding from the latter.

Tim has trained diplomats and military advisers from all over Asia since 2015 for the UNITAR Hiroshima Nuclear and Non-Proliferation (NDNP) Training Programme.
The programme gives diplomats the unique opportunity to learn in a city steeped in history and perfectly suited for training on nuclear disarmament.

Nearly 20 diplomats and government officials from Asian countries completed the UNITAR Hiroshima Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Training Programme, held 13-18 February 2023. The diplomats updated their understanding of the global nuclear debate and met young activists to learn about their initiatives for a nuclear-free world. The programme’s past two cycles were run virtually due to COVID-19-related restrictions.
