As far as he can remember, Algerian born Noureddine Benaidja always expressed interest for a position in the public sector, not a surprise as both his parents pursued their careers working for the government. After four years at Alger's Ecole Nationale d'Administration (ENA), he started to work for the Interior Ministry since 2001. He then studied law, both in Algeria and in France. Now aged 38 and still living thirty miles from Alger, he's still working on his Ph. D. while holding the position of Training Officer for the Ministry.

Even though the movement of people as a response to changes in the environment is not a new phenomenon, this issue has risen on the international agenda as a result of the growing awareness of the reality of climate change and its possible implications. Climate change is predicted to increase climate variability and lead to greater intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. With the number of extreme weather events doubling over the past 20 years from 200 to more than 400 a year, some of these effects are already felt. More than 20 million people were displaced by…
Over the past several years, UNITAR’s Chemicals and Waste Management Programme has assisted countries with a wide variety of projects to address the human and environmental risks posed by mercury. Mercury is a “heavy metal” that, in some forms and if used improperly, can significantly harm humans and the environment. UNITAR will participate in this process.
As part of this important work, UNITAR has…

5 June, Geneva, Switzerland - UNOSAT has been investing in the development of live web-based maps capable of providing rapid and essential information for disaster prevention and emergency response and able to integrate crowd sourced data, photos and videos. UNOSAT experts believe that this type of integrated, near-real time products will constitute the backbone of future geospatial decision support systems.
