December 2024 - UNITAR is dedicated to advancing the UN’s Pact for the Future by building a more resilient, peaceful, and just global society through targeted training, capacity-building, and educational offers while fostering strategic partnerships. 

By strengthening conflict prevention, digital innovation, and the empowerment of women and youth, programming by UNITAR's Division for Peace directly contributes to the key pillars of the Pact. UNITAR furthermore aligns its initiatives with key frameworks such as the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations. 

By supporting stabilization, the rule of law, post-conflict recovery, and the Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 16 on peaceful and just societies—UNITAR is fostering a collaborative approach to sustainable peace and security in an increasingly interconnected world. 

By working closely with Member States, UNITAR builds vital foundations for a more sustainable, secure world, aligned with the Pact’s transformative vision for a globally resilient and cooperative society.

In today’s digital era, UNITAR recognizes the transformative potential of technology in conflict prevention and resolution. The institute prioritizes the promotion of digital literacy by equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to use digital platforms effectively for advocacy, communication, and early detection of conflict risks. This includes the development of early warning systems that integrate digital tools and data analytics to monitor emerging threats and enable timely responses. Additionally, UNITAR offers cybersecurity training to safeguard peace initiatives from digital threats, emphasizing the importance of secure communication in fragile environments.

As a consequence, data-driven solutions form the backbone of many of UNITAR’s conflict prevention strategies. By providing training in data analytics and digital tools, the organization helps stakeholders make informed decisions in peacekeeping operations and conflict prevention initiatives. The use of collaborative digital platforms also fosters greater cooperation between Member States, further enhancing regional and global stability.

Institutional resilience is another critical area of focus for UNITAR. The organization provides crisis management training to prepare security forces and civilian authorities for effective responses to emergencies. It also works to build institutional capacity in managing challenges such as internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees. By focusing on sustainable reintegration and long-term strategies, UNITAR strengthens the ability of national institutions to address humanitarian crises and contribute to stabilization.

Youth engagement is a vital component of UNITAR’s peace and security efforts. Recognizing young people as catalysts for change, UNITAR trains emerging leaders and equip them with conflict-prevention skills. These youth-led initiatives foster stability and inspire innovative approaches to peacebuilding within their communities. Additionally, UNITAR encourages creativity and collaboration through innovation challenges, which provide young people with opportunities to develop digital solutions for conflict prevention and post-conflict recovery. 

Advancing gender equality is also prioritized, with targeted training and resources promoting women’s empowerment and aligning with Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) commitments to build inclusive and resilient societies.

UNITAR also plays a significant role in post-conflict recovery efforts by addressing the socio-economic challenges that hinder long-term stabilization. The organization provides training and resources to support local economic recovery, enabling communities to rebuild their livelihoods and reduce the risk of future violence. Moreover, UNITAR strengthens governance structures by offering mentoring and advisory services to national institutions, helping to restore the rule of law and integrate lessons learned from past peace operations.

UNITAR’s trainings fully integrate conflict prevention and stabilization efforts through targeted strategies designed to prevent escalation and stabilize fragile regions, focusing on governance, economic recovery, and security in post-conflict settings. Strengthening capacities for preventive diplomacy involves specialized training and knowledge exchange for diplomats, UN officials, and regional staff to promote dialogue, cooperation, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, in line with Article 33 of the UN Charter.

Aligned with Action 7 of the Pact for the Future, UNITAR enhances capacities in rule of law and institutional resilience. Initiatives such as tailored judicial training programmes in regions like Mali empower stakeholders, including judges and prosecutors, to uphold human rights and ensure accessible and inclusive justice systems. UNITAR collaborates with specialized institutions like the Académie Internationale de Lutte contre le Terrorisme (AILCT) to address terrorism's multifaceted impacts. By equipping policymakers and practitioners with tools to counter violent extremism, UNITAR contributes to a future free from terrorism while promoting social cohesion and economic resilience​.

Protecting civilians is a central priority in UNITAR’s initiatives to ensure that national security forces are prepared to minimize harm to civilian populations and infrastructure during armed conflicts. By adhering to international humanitarian law, these programmes enhance the accountability and operational readiness of security forces, ensuring their effective contribution to peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.

Lastly, UNITAR supports Member States by organizing targeted and innovative events, learning formats, and networking opportunities that encourage cross-sector collaboration to develop innovative solutions for stabilization, post-conflict recovery, and conflict prevention. These initiatives aim to inspire creativity, strengthen partnerships, and build community resilience in addressing emerging global challenges.

By operationalizing the UN Pact for the Future, Global Digital Compact, and Declaration on Future Generations through targeted training, learning and capacity development, UNITAR's Division for Peace can play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of peace, conflict prevention, stabilization, and security. These efforts not only strengthen existing frameworks but also empower conflict-affected communities to rebuild and thrive, fostering resilience and harmony worldwide. Through a reinforced commitment to inclusiveness, prevention and peacemaking, UNITAR’s work is laying a lasting foundation for future generations to live in dignity, peace, and prosperity on a stable, healthy planet, free from the "scourge of war”.
