Joint UNITAR – MGIMO Master’s Programmes
Starting in September 2018, the Division for Multilateral Diplomacy has inaugurated three new Master’s programmes in Moscow, Russia, in partnership with the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). The programmes, respectively focused on project management, multilateral diplomacy and humanitarian cooperation and external relations of region, are held in Russian and English language and will have a duration of 2 years each.
These postgraduate courses offer the opportunity for students to acquaint themselves with today’s global trends and issues in the realm of foreign policy and international relations, as well as introduce them to the world-leading diplomats and their decision-making processes. They also receive exclusive exposure to international practitioners as well as technical knowledge about the United Nations, its mechanisms and governing bodies, which institutions like UNITAR are especially qualified to offer as an asset of higher education programmes. Finally, students will have the unique opportunity to benefit from job placements within the United Nations system as part of the degree, adding a further element of excellence to the course.
More information on the programmes can be found here.
Professional Diploma: International Leaders Programme
The “International Leaders Programme” Professional Diploma, which the Division launched in partnership with Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU) in Dubai, aims to strengthen the participants’ capacities and skills and help shape them into more effective international leaders. The programme has been designed for practicing diplomats, civil servants, graduate students and private sector professionals working in international relations who wish to refresh or expand their knowledge under the guidance of experienced practitioners and academics.
The effectiveness of this Diploma lies in its intensive and comprehensive nature, as it comprises eight modules, taking place over the course of six months and covering the most important topics and practical skills that a future leader should master to be as successful as possible in their career. Participants attending the programme also have the opportunity to experience different international contexts and be exposed to the multilateral working environment of Geneva, as the modules take place both in Dubai and at UNITAR headquarters. After a successful first session that took place between 22 and 29 March, UNITAR is ready to host the second cohort of participants, which is planned to arrive to Geneva during the month of June.
The partnership between the Division for Multilateral Diplomacy and HBMSU is only at its onset, as the joint programme will open the road for other strategic projects, potentially concerning innovative and pressing matters such as frontier diplomacy and leadership courses designed to empower young people, and women in particular.

UNGBS Online Platform Launch
Lastly, this year the Division is pleased to announce the launch of its online UN Governing Bodies Secretariat (UNGBS) platform for inter-agency coordination and information sharing of summary outcome documents of UNGBS meetings.
The platform will allow all organizations attending UNGBS meetings to share their documents and exchange knowledge on the different outcomes, including rules of procedures, codes of conducts and organizational charts. In addition, participants can also access UNITAR’s courses and events, keep up with the news and access a digital library filled with UNITAR’s publications.
UNGBS meetings are organized on a yearly basis by governing bodies of the UN agencies to discuss issues specific to the governance of their respective organizations. The gatherings allow UN agencies to share best practices on specific topics such as the sustainable development goals, and to progress on the viability of staff exchanges between member organizations.
The platform can be accessible on the following link: http://ungbs.unitar.org/ and requests for registration should be sent via email to the division for multilateral diplomacy at the following address: rabih.haddad@unitar.org.
UNITAR looks forward to welcoming new members on the platform!
