26 October 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR’s Division for Prosperity launched its training programme “Bolstering livelihoods: Digital reskilling for Ukrainian women evacuees in Poland“ on 16 October 2023 at an event in Warsaw. Guests included government officials, programme partners, academic institutions, and NGOs, as well as several participants of the new training programme.
6 October 2023, Geneva, Switzerland - To mark its 60th anniversary, UNITAR is organizing in Geneva, starting on the 2nd of October, a photo exhibition, displayed on the Rotonde du Quai du Mont-Blanc (across from the Brunswick Monument), will illustrate 60 years of history as well as stories of UNITAR alumni who made a positive change in their community. The alumni featured in the panel exhibition come from Bangladesh, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Kenya, Maldives, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, United Arab Emirates and Vanuatu. The opening ceremony on the 6th of October (4 pm) of the photo exhibition will be attended by Mr. Nikhil Seth, the Executive Director of UNITAR, Ms. Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, H.E. Mr. Raymond Loretan, President of the Diplomatic Club of Geneva, and H.E. Mr. Alfonso Gomez, Mayor of Geneva.
28 September 2023, Geneva, Switzerland – United Nations Institute for Training and Institute (UNITAR) Division for Prosperity will host in partnership with the University of Geneva a public forum "Scaling Responsible Entrepreneurship and Solutions to Global Challenges" on 3 October 2023 at 13:30-17:30 (CEST/UTC+2). It will take place at the UNITAR HQ, WMO Building, in Conference room C2, on the 1st floor in Switzerland. Prior registration is required to attend in person.
21 September 2023, New York, USA - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and Microsoft East Africa signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to support the digital-technology upskilling and reskilling of 5,000 women and youth in sub-Saharan Africa to enhance their employability and livelihoods in the digital economy. The digital up/reskilling and green livelihood programme is funded by the Government and People of Japan and will run until March 2024.
24 August 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – On June 2023, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) has begun a new collaboration with the Hiroshima Corporation for Higher Education (HCHE) in charge of managing Eikei University of Hiroshima. As part of their curriculum, Eikei University students spend a trimester engaging in Project-Based Learning (PBL), tackling real-world issues to contribute to their communities.
11 August 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – On 6 August 2023, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) held a public youth pitch event “‘Peace & XX’ Ideation – Nuclear Disarmament and Sustainable Futures” at Eikei University of Hiroshima. Select youth from Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Tokyo presented their ideas in groups on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation for a sustainable future based on given sustainable development goals (SDGs) to expert panellists for their feedback.
3 August 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – Women and youth in 24 countries in Africa are invited to apply to the UNITAR programme Developing Essential Digital Skills for Women and Youth in Africa: Enhancing Employment Opportunities and Livelihood Development in the Digital Economy. Over six months, participants will build high-demand digital skills to increase employment and income-generating potential to develop socially responsible digital start-ups and improve leadership and entrepreneurial skills to drive change and innovation in their communities. The deadline for applications is 4 September 2023.
3 August 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – Women and youth in Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe are invited to apply to the UNITAR programme Developing Green Livelihoods for Women and Youth in Africa: Strengthening Food Security, Supporting Climate-Resilient Economies. Over six months, participants will learn entrepreneurial and digital skills so they can develop climate-resilient businesses and create inclusive, environmentally responsible and viable employment and livelihood opportunities. The deadline for applications is 4 September 2023.
2 August 2023, Hiroshima, Japan - Women living in or from the Pacific Island countries and territories are invited to apply to the UNITAR Women’s Leadership in Tsunami-based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) for World Tsunami Awareness Day 2023. Women tend to have a higher vulnerability to disaster risks and building their capacity will reduce these risks. People from Asia and men are also welcome to apply. The programme aims to equip participants with lifelong skills to develop inclusive disaster risk reduction plans that match the needs of their communities and country. The programme will pay particular attention to gender-specific capacities and vulnerabilities in communities. The deadline to apply is 1 September.
