UNITAR Strengthens the Negotiation Skills of Diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal
9-10 March 2018, Kathmandu, Nepal – At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, UNITAR successfully delivered a two-day training workshop in Kathmandu on Negotiation Skills and Techniques. The workshop was attended by over 30 participants primarily from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as several participants from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Population & Environment and the Ministry of Commerce. Also in attendance was the Nepal’s Foreign Secretary, Mr. Shanker Das Bairagi who provided the opening and closing remarks.
The first day of the training workshop explored the theoretical underpinnings of positional bargaining and the pillars of principled negotiations. Whilst the second day was more practice-oriented and focused primarily on bilateral simulation exercises. The trainer, Mr. Rabih El-Haddad, Manager of the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme of UNITAR, also used video analysis to explore the tools available to negotiators working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs thatthey could use in their day-to-day work.
Feedback from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the participants was overwhelmingly positive, with over 92% stating that they intend to use the content of the workshop, whilst a further 96% of participants stated that the workshop was relevant to their job. Similarly, 96% of respondents agreed that their awareness of the subject matter had increased as a result of the training. UNITAR looks forward to further extending the partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.
