UNITAR Participates in Six Activities at UNOG Open Day 2017

10 October 2017, Geneva, Switzerland – With over 15,000 visitors at the European Headquarters of the United Nations, Palais des Nations in Geneva on Open Day 2017, UNITAR’s programmes proudly showcased their work including:

• UNOSAT displaying the virtual reality equipment at the innovation cube (SDG 9)
• Peacekeeping Training Programme educating about Mission: Zhobia at the peace cube (SDG 16)
• Multilateral Diplomacy Programme promoting the Women Leadership Programme in the gender equality cube (SDG 5)
• Peacekeeping Training Programme teaching about renewable energy solutions at the affordable and clean energy cube (SDG 7)

At the exhibition stand under the International Organizations’ tent, UNITAR had an opportunity to engage with visitors, diplomatic leaders, and other UN related organizations. UNITAR employees educated the public about UNITAR’s mission as well as various programme’s training workshops and courses. A lot of young professionals were intrigued about earning a Master’s Degree from UNITAR and partnered universities.

“For me, the atmosphere was exciting while interacting with people and providing information to visitors about careers at UNITAR and highlighting the development and training work we do. It’s a great reminder of the significant work we do at UNITAR.” - Junko Taira, Green Development and Climate Change Programme (GCP).  

UNITAR’s Executive Director, Nikhil Seth, was a guest panellist at “Speed Meeting” where he answered questions from the public.

One participant asked, “What motivates you day-to-day to work at UNITAR?”

Mr. Seth answered, “UNITAR’s work is very practical, aiming to build the capacities of public policy officials in the areas of chemicals and waste management, peacekeeping, social development, SDG implementation, gender equality, poverty, and many other fields. UNITAR’s work is tangible and concrete, converting what is discussed and decided in the great halls and conference rooms of the United Nations, into realities in the lives of people from the remotest communities. This provides a great sense of satisfaction.”
