UNITAR Organizes Climate Change Diplomacy Orientation Programme Ahead of COP21
November, Geneva, Switzerland - The Climate Change Diplomacy Orientation Programme for Diplomats in Geneva took place on the 3 – 4 November 2015. This two-day workshop was the third in a series of ten activities comprising UNITAR’s Executive Diploma in Diplomatic Practice, and was held ahead of the upcoming 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP21, scheduled in Paris for later in the month.
Drawing on the wealth of knowledge of main speaker Mr. Frederic Gagnon-Lebrun, head of Climate Change Mitigation at the International Institute for Sustainable Development, participants were able to gain a better understanding of the nuances and complexities present within the domain of intergovernmental climate change discussions, and were empowered with the tools required to participate actively in the United Nations Climate Change Conference. In addition, a panel discussion was also held on the final day of the activity, bringing in various expert perspectives from the public, private and academic sectors.
Participant response to the event was extremely positive, with one participant stating that “the training gave me sufficient tools to face the challenges regarding the negotiations of COP21”. In addition, 96% of participants were highly satisfied with the activity.
UNITAR now looks forward to the upcoming Conference Diplomacy and Multilateral Negotiations workshop to be held on the 14 December 2015.
