9 February 2026, New York, USA The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) launched its Online Global Competency Programme, welcoming a group of participants from various regions in China to an immersive virtual experience designed to strengthen their skills in diplomacy, negotiation, and global engagement.

Opening the Programme: Building a foundation for global competence

The programme began with an opening ceremony featuring Mr. Marco Suazo, Head of the UNITAR Office in New York. Participants were encouraged to actively engage with instructors and each other as they embarked on a journey of professional and personal development. Mr. Suazo reflected on his early experiences as a diplomat and emphasized the importance of dialogue, collaboration, and critical thinking—skills participants would practice throughout the programme.

Exploring the realities of diplomatic work

During the “Working as a Diplomat” session, participants gained practical insights into the roles and responsibilities of diplomacy. Dr. Angel Angelov, Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in New York guided participants through interactive discussions on negotiation, multilateral engagement, and cultural awareness. Participants examined real-world scenarios, learning the skills needed to navigate complex international environments and gain hands-on understanding of diplomatic practice.

Preparing participants for careers as international civil servants

In the final session, participants explored pathways to international civil service with guidance from Dr. Jimena Leiva Roesch, Director of Global Initiatives at the International Peace Institute, Ms. Ye-min Wu, Regional Director, Asia-Pacific at HD. Participants discussed the competencies, ethics, and leadership qualities necessary to contribute effectively to global governance, while exploring strategies to address challenges related to peace, climate, and sustainable development.

From knowledge to confidence

Throughout the programme, participants engaged in interactive exercises, peer exchange, and practical activities designed to enhance negotiation, analytical, and leadership skills. By the end of the week, participants had strengthened their understanding of global competencies, gained practical insights into diplomacy and international service, and built the confidence to contribute meaningfully in professional international contexts.
