UNITAR Invites the International Court of Justice to Geneva

A briefing for the Geneva diplomatic community about the ICJ’s contribution to international peace and justice

Registrar of the ICJ, Philippe CouvreurNovember 2014, Geneva, Switzerland - It is the world’s only universal court with general jurisdiction: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague has contributed to the peaceful settlement of legal inter-state disputes and the evolution of international law since 1945.  In light of the crucial role the ICJ plays for the entire United Nations system, UNITAR invited Mr. Philippe Couvreur, Registrar of the ICJ, to brief the diplomatic community in Geneva about the ICJ’s contribution to international peace and justice.  As head of the Court’s Registry, Mr. Couvreur’s tasks are of judicial, administrative and diplomatic nature. This is due to the ICJ’s dual role as both a court of justice and an international organ.

Date and Venue of the Briefing

The briefing will take place on Monday, 24 November 2014, from 15:00 to 17:00 in the Council Chamber of the Palais des Nations.

Following his presentation, Mr. Couvreur will be open to questions from the floor, giving members of the diplomatic community the opportunity to discuss areas of interest shared by UN Member States and the ICJ. The briefing will be held in French and simultaneous interpretation into English will be provided.

UNITAR warmly invites all members of the diplomatic community to register for the briefing free of charge. The event is a unique opportunity to enhance participants’ awareness of the ICJ’s role within the UN system and international law.
