Since 2005, UNITAR supports this process through the Migration and Development Seminar Series at United Nations Headquarters. The Series is implemented in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the MacArthur Foundation. In addition to the ongoing activities of the Series in New York, UNITAR and IOM, with the support of the Government of Spain, will be implementing a multi-year joint project on the strengthening of capacities in the field of international migration and development. UNITAR and IOM are also engaging the Alliance of Civilizations (AoC) for the operationalisation of its migration pillar.
UNITAR has produced a significant body of knowledge on international migration and its interlinkages with development and other policy areas such as health, the environment, and peace and security. It continues to explore emerging issues that deserve further attention in the current policy debate on international migration and development such as the effects of climate change on migration, the transnational engagement of diaspora communities, especially in post-conflict situations, and the impacts of the current financial and economic crisis on migration and migration policies.
