Under this joint effort, UNEP Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) will build upon the training resources (case studies and exercises) developed under the UNITAR administered project, Climate Change Capacity Development (C3D) to develop a joint module on vulnerability and impact assessment.
This new module will then be included as a new chapter into the UNEP Integrated Environmental Assessment (IEA) training manual that seeks to help build capacity for forward looking integrated environmental assessments and has among its target audience, facilitators who construct IEA training curricula, such as mid-level leaders and practitioners in public agencies responsible for initiating and managing assessments.
“This collaboration offers an opportunity for the two agencies to join efforts and harmonize outputs under the One-UN initiative and is an example of leveraging on available resources.” commented Johara Bellali from UNEP-DEWA while visiting the UNITAR offices in Geneva to kick start the collaboration effort with Livia Bizikova from the International Institute for Sustainable Development.
The UNITAR administered project Climate Change Capacity Development, (C3D) sought to address capacity needs for climate change in developing countries and had as one of its major outputs, a training package on climate change vulnerability and adaptation to serve as a resource guide for trainers. This training package was developed by ENDA-TM one of the project partners that is an expert in this area especially for the African region.
This new training module is expected to be available in mid May 2009 and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) behind the development of the current IEA training manual, will support the joint effort by writing up and customizing the module to fit the IEA framework. The new training module will be tested in regional workshops and later be customized for e-learning.
This collaboration responds to the first stage of outputs expected under the Belgian financed UNEP Project Integrated environmental assessments and capacity building at sub-regional, national and city levels in the context of Adaptation to and Mitigation of climate change which aims to produce “environment and climate change outlooks through the respective UNEP regional partners in Africa, Asia, Pacific, Latin America & Caribbean, West Asia and Europe.
