29 May 2026, Beijing, China – The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the School of Journalism and Communication of Tsinghua University officially launched the first edition of the Global Chief Sustainability Officer Leadership Programme in Beijing, China, to strengthen the capacity of senior professionals to lead sustainability, ESG governance, strategic communication and responsible business transformation.
The programme responds to growing expectations for organizations to integrate sustainability into governance, business strategy, communication and operations. It also supports UNITAR’s strategic focus on strengthening individual and institutional capacities to advance the 2030 Agenda through practical, forward-looking learning.
Jointly initiated by UNITAR and Tsinghua University with the support of the Beijing Global Talents Exchange Association, the programme is designed to equip senior professionals with global governance perspectives, strategic implementation capacity and cross-cultural communication skills. It aims to support participants in leading sustainability-related change within their organizations and sectors.
The programme brings together the complementary strengths of the partners. Tsinghua University contributes academic expertise in international communication, global governance, digital transformation and cross-cultural exchange. UNITAR contributes its experience in capacity-building, international learning design, global expert networks and sustainable development knowledge. The Beijing Global Talents Exchange Association, an organization in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, provides professional networks and practical resources to support programme implementation.
The first edition of the programme will address key topics including global risks and sustainable development strategies, ESG governance and corporate diagnosis, green transition and industrial upgrading, artificial intelligence and digital empowerment, strategic communication and global influence. Through a practice-oriented and internationally informed learning approach, the programme seeks to support participants in understanding global sustainability trends, strengthening responsible business practices and enhancing their capacity to communicate effectively in international contexts.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Michael Adalla, representative of the Director of UNITAR’s Division for Prosperity, emphasized the importance of sustainability leadership in a rapidly changing global environment. He noted that enterprises today are expected not only to respond to market and regulatory changes, but also to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development, climate action, responsible innovation and inclusive prosperity. Strengthening leadership capacity, he highlighted, is essential for translating sustainability commitments into practical action.
The launch ceremony was attended by Professor Zhou Qing’an, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication of Tsinghua University; Professor Jiang Qiaolei, Vice Dean of the School; Mr. Michael Adalla; Mr. Ding Zhifeng, President of the Beijing Global Talents Exchange Association; and Mr. Li Zhiyong, Senior Expert of the Association.
The Global Chief Sustainability Officer Leadership Programme will continue to be developed as an annual initiative. Looking ahead, the partners aim to support enterprises and senior professionals in deepening their engagement with global sustainable development governance, improving ESG and responsible business practices, and enhancing international communication capacity.
By combining academic excellence, international capacity-building and practical business-oriented learning, the programme reflects a shared commitment to preparing leaders who can help drive sustainable transformation and contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
