18 November 2022, Lima, Peru – UNITAR and the General Secretariat of the Andean Community (SGCAN) signed an Interinstitutional Agreement to collaborate in the development, implementation and maintenance of a regional dashboard that will include relevant road safety statistics for CAN Member States.

In the Andean Community, more than 325,000 traffic collisions were recorded in the CAN countries during 2019, resulting in 135,834 people injured and 13,424 fatalities. The SGCAN is charged with preparing the annual statistical reports on road safety, by harmonizing and compiling the descriptive statistics received by the CAN Member Countries, such as number, type, and area of collisions. To support this effort and help improve data collection that leads to targeted interventions, UNITAR and the SGCAN are pleased to join forces to develop a highly interactive “Virtual Road Safety Dashboard” that aims to provide real-time interactive tables (including charts and graphs), trends and most common factors of traffic crashes in the region. Furthermore, the Dashboard aims to enable road safety professionals in CAN member countries to constantly monitor and track changes in traffic and safety over time. This tool will be complemented by training workshops dedicated to supporting the designated country focal points responsible for data management.

As part of the road safety strategy promoted by the General Secretariat of CAN, a Specific Letter of Agreement has been signed as part of the Framework Agreement with UNITAR for the development of the Virtual Road Safety Dashboard, which will be an effective tool to support the initiatives of the Member Countries in this area. We welcome this agreement and reaffirm our commitment to promote effective actions to reduce road accidents in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. We work "For the lives of the CAN”. This Virtual Road Safety Dashboard to be launched in 2023 aims to serve as a tool to collect and analyze data on crashes, deaths, and injuries in the region and ultimately guide policy and implementation of targeted actions. Mr Nikhil Seth, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNITAR.

This joint initiative is in line with UNITAR and SGCAN's objective of enhancing the capacities of Member States to advance towards the achievement of road safety targets, and it is also aligned with the Global Plan of the 2021-2030 UN Decade of Action for Road Safety that calls for strengthening the capacity of road safety professionals working for the government, and other stakeholders from the private sector, civil society, and research institutions on data collection systems for road safety.

The development of the Virtual Road Safety Dashboard is made possible with the support of AB InBev and its expertise in data management and measurement of KPIs.

18 de noviembre de 2022, Lima, Perú - UNITAR y la Secretaría General de la Comunidad Andina (SGCAN) firmaron un Acuerdo Interinstitucional para colaborar en el desarrollo, implementación y mantenimiento de un Tablero Virtual regional que incluirá estadísticas relevantes de seguridad vial para los Estados Miembros de la CAN.

En la Comunidad Andina, durante el año 2019 se registraron más de 325 mil colisiones de tránsito en los países de la CAN, con un saldo de 135 mil 834 personas lesionadas y 13 mil 424 fallecidas. La SGCAN es la encargada de elaborar los informes estadísticos anuales sobre seguridad vial, armonizando y recopilando las estadísticas descriptivas que reciben los Países Miembros de la CAN, como número, tipo y zona de colisiones. Para apoyar este esfuerzo y ayudar a mejorar la recopilación de datos que conduzcan a intervenciones específicas, UNITAR y la SGCAN se complacen en unir fuerzas para desarrollar un "Tablero Virtual de Seguridad Vial" altamente interactivo que tiene como objetivo proporcionar tablas interactivas en tiempo real (incluyendo tablas y gráficos), las tendencias y los factores más comunes de los accidentes de tráfico en la región. Además, el tablero pretende permitir a los profesionales de la seguridad vial de los países miembros de la CAN supervisar y seguir constantemente los cambios en el tráfico y la seguridad a lo largo del tiempo. Esta herramienta se complementará con talleres de formación dedicados a apoyar a los puntos focales de los países designados como responsables de la gestión de datos.

"Este Tablero Virtual de Seguridad Vial que se lanzará en 2023 tiene como objetivo servir como herramienta para recopilar y analizar datos sobre accidentes, muertes y lesiones en la región y, en última instancia, orientar las políticas y la implementación de acciones específicas" Sr. Nikhil Seth, Subsecretario General de la ONU y Director Ejecutivo de UNITAR.

Esta iniciativa conjunta está en consonancia con el objetivo de UNITAR y SGCAN de mejorar las capacidades de los Estados miembros para avanzar hacia el logro de los objetivos de seguridad vial, y también está alineado con el Plan Global de la Década de Acción de las Naciones Unidas para la Seguridad Vial 2021-2030 que impulsa el fortalecimiento de la capacidad de los profesionales de la seguridad vial que trabajan para gobiernos, y otras partes interesadas del sector privado, la sociedad civil y las instituciones de investigación sobre los sistemas de recopilación de datos para la seguridad vial.

El desarrollo del Tablero Virtual de Seguridad Vial es posible gracias al apoyo de AB InBev y su experiencia en la gestión de datos y la medición de indicadores clave de rendimiento.
