3 December 2024, Mpumalanga, South Africa – Following the successful kick-off in Eswatini, the “Management Practices for Safer Roads” workshop series continued with sessions in the cities of Gqbertha, Rustenburg and Mpumalanga in South Africa.
Organized by UNITAR in collaboration with CIFAL Durban, the eThekwini Municipal Academy (EMA), and its Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), these workshops brought together over 155 government officials, law enforcement officers, and road safety stakeholders to advance road safety initiatives across Southern Africa
This series aims to empower participants with practical tools and methodologies to address pressing road safety challenges through:
- Conducting road safety assessments to identify infrastructure risks
- Implementing corrective measures using a toolkit-based approach
- Strengthening enforcement mechanisms through multi-level collaboration
- Encouraging behavioral change among road users to promote safer practices
Gqebertha – 25 November 2024
Held in Gqbertha, this workshop gathered 45 participants who engaged in dynamic discussions and practical exercises for developing local strategies to improve road safety. Participants explored methodologies for identifying high-risk areas and implementing targeted interventions.
Rustenburg – 27 November 2024
The third workshop, held in Rustenburg attracted 50 participants, focusing on capacity building and strategies to strengthen enforcement mechanisms. Attendees collaborated on solutions to enhance compliance with road safety regulations and improve inter-agency cooperation.
Mpumalanga – 28 November 2024
The final workshop in Mpumalanga brought together 60 participants, who engaged in interactive discussions to enhance their knowledge and practical expertise. The session emphasized the role of public awareness campaigns and community involvement in fostering behavioral change among road users.
The interactive sessions, inspired by the Management Practices for Safer Roads toolkit, enabled attendees to leave with clear strategies and a deeper understanding of how to improve road safety outcomes in their respective regions.
The workshops concluded with a call to action, urging participants to apply the knowledge gained to transform the Southern African road safety.
