New e-course on Chairing International Conferences

25 April - 8 May 2016

New e-course on Chairmanship

20 April 2016, Geneva, Switzerland - Every year, thousands of formal and informal meetings take place at the United Nations and its related bodies and agencies. Representatives within the United Nations system as well as from governments and other bodies such as international and non-governmental organizations are appointed or elected to chair these meetings.

It is important for all delegates to understand what the chairperson is doing, and why he or she is doing it. Successful conferences require strong and able chairpersons to be effective, and need supportive and cooperative delegates. This in turn means that all delegates who wish to influence outcomes of the conference need to understand what the chairperson is trying to do. If they want the conference to reach certain decisions, they need to work with and through the chairperson. In order to equip those professionals with the necessary working knowledge and skills, UNITAR will launch the next edition of its online course on Chairing International Conferences which will take place from 25 April to 8 May 2016.

The course is open to government officers, in particular recently accredited diplomats who are new to a multilateral environment and those who expect to be chairman in upcoming conferences.  Private sector specialists and students whose work or studies are related to this subject are also encouraged to apply.
