12 March 2013, Antananarivo, Republic of Madagascar – In the framework of the project “Strengthening Capacities in the Republic of Madagascar for National Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) Implementation and Supporting GHS Capacity Building,” a National Forum on Governance for SAICM implementation was held from 5 to 6 March 2013 in Madagascar. The objectives of the workshop were to:
- Raise awareness about SAICM
- Review and endorse the National SAICM Implementation Plan, Terms of Reference (TORs) for an interministerial coordination mechanism, a stakeholder involvement policy, and TORs for an information exchange mechanism
- Discuss next project activities, namely the development of a national policy for SAICM implementation, and the preparation of a situation and gap analysis for the implementation of the Globally Harmonized System of classification and labelling of chemicals (GHS).
Some 55 participants, from public and private sectors, civil society, and academia, were given presentations on SAICM and the international context for sound chemicals management, followed by presentations of the above listed key project activities. The National Forum was hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests of the Republic of Madagascar, with technical support provided by UNITAR, and financial support provided by SAICM’s Quick Start Programme Trust Fund.
