The UNITAR Peacekeeping Training Programme (PTP), in partnership with the International Security Sector Advisory Team (ISSAT), is happy to announce the launch of the first ever e-learning course on security sector reform. This much awaited course combines the experience and knowledge of ISSAT and the interactive and online educational expertise of UNITAR. The course has been developed from ISSAT’s Level 1 Basic course on SSR, and is recognized by both organizations with UNITAR/ISSAT certification.

The importance of this e-learning programme cannot be understated. As more and more countries within the international community engage in supporting or implementing SSR, the demand for SSR training increases. The need for experienced SSR practitioners is rising; however, face-to-face trainings are unable to meet this growing need. The UNITAR/ISSAT e-learning course aims to fill this gap by offering this free learning opportunity with the goal of building capacity and knowledge of SSR principles, actors and implementing techniques for professionals working in or around this field.

This introductory course is developed to allow participants the flexibility of enrolling at any point, and completing the whole introductory training within three hours. It offers a package that shares principles, concepts, contexts and components of SSR, using existing and emerging knowledge, experience and international SSR policy framework. Participants will find videos from leading experts in the field, case studies, diagrams, and additional learning points. The course also features an audio narrative that leads the learner through the material. Following the learning component, participants need to score eighty percent to obtain their course completion certificate.

Security Sector Reform knowledge is vital for both development and security work, and is being increasingly recognized as such. This course not only builds on up that knowledge, but also provides participant with a competitive edge in the professional sphere.
