18 January 2012, Geneva, Switzerland – The relationship between Swiss universities and UNOSAT continues to grow with success. As of January this year, UNOSAT shares its know-how with students of the University of Geneva in a new area, that of Geomatics. This discipline, also known as geospatial technology or geomatics engineering, is about gathering, storing, processing, and delivering geographic information, or spatially referenced information.

UNOSAT is developing new solutions in this area to support its next-generation web-based mapping services which will extend to humanitarian relief and human rights and human security. It is widely known that geographic information has acquired a fundamental role in decision making and analysis so that today geographic information systems (GIS) are to be considered strategic activities for organizations, governments and private companies alike.

The main objective of the Certificate in Geomatics delivered by the University of Geneva is to provide training focused on new technologies for spatial simulation, with an interdisciplinary perspective. The courses are focused on social science, economics and natural sciences. Half the number of total teaching hours is dedicated to seminars and tutorials with a practical and pragmatic angle which matches the UNOSAT operational philosophy of applying geospatial technology to generate usable solutions in multiple areas.
