15 April 2015, Algiers, Algeria – CIFAL Maghreb – UNITAR's affiliated Training Centre in Algiers – convened thirty-one government officials of the Algerian Ministry of Interior and Local Authorities for a Training of Trainers delivered on 31 March – 1 April 2015 in Algiers.

CIFAL Maghreb delivers Training of Trainers in Algeria The training session focused on the Post-2015 Development Agenda as well as on the implications of the agenda for local decision-makers in Algeria. While presenting the process towards a new development framework, the session also provided an overview of the MDGs achievements worldwide and in Algeria, in particular. In addition, the session explored how to deliver training on project management for local constituencies.

This is the second in a series of training workshops. The first Training of Trainers module was delivered in Geneva and focused on reviewing the pedagogy of adult learning, improving and assessing the efficiency of training materials, elaborating presentations and acquiring persuasion skills, implementing different types of training activities depending on selected objectives, and managing different types of audiences.

The Algerian government has, for many years, made training a priority, in particular, to empower state representatives at the subnational level and elected officials at the local level. The country can rely on a strong training apparatus focused on competence, with the National School of Administration (ENA) and the establishment a number of training institutions for local authorities across the country, as its central pillars. In this context, UNITAR aims at complementing existing programmes by focusing, inter alia, on strengthening the capacity of trainers to provide state-of-the-art training that empowers local authorities in the most practical way.

In the fringe of this training session, Mr. Alex Mejia, Senior Manager of UNITAR’s Decentralized Cooperation Programme, met with high level representatives of the Ministry of Interior and Local Authorities, including Mr. Abdelhalim Merabti, Director General of Human resources, Training and Statutes, and Mr. Azzedine Belkacem-Nacer, Director General of Local Authorities, to discuss the continuation of joint initiatives to strengthen the capacities of local authorities in Algeria and the Maghreb region.
