6-12 May 2019, Madrid, Spain - The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Madrid (CIFAL Madrid) has joined the international road safety campaign “Save Lives #SpeakUp” in the framework of the 5th UN Global Road Safety Week, taking place 6 to 12 May 2019.
This year, the 5th UN Global Road Safety Week highlights the need for strong leadership to advance road safety related global targets. Thousands of advocates globally, including CIFAL Madrid, are taking the opportunity of the Week to #SpeakUp for road safety, including calling for urgent action on the concrete interventions to save lives. Despite progress in many countries, road traffic deaths continue to rise. According to the WHO, road traffic injuries are now the leading killer of children and young people aged 5-29 years. To add up to this initiative, this week CIFAL Madrid is conducting an awareness campaign called “Road Safety is Everybody’s Business” to raise public awareness about the need to strengthen child road safety in Spain. This campaign takes place from 7- 10 May in strategic places within Spain to reach out more than 8,000 kids and families.
The campaign has initiated in Pozuelo de Alarcon (Madrid) on May 7, following Roquetas de Mar (Almeria) on May 8, Concello de Sanxenxo (Pontevedra) on May 9, closing the event in Malaga the 10th of May. The campaign gathers national authorities, including local government officials, police officers, school members and association of parents.
This activity features different training workshops that cover topics such as proper use of child restraints systems; legislation and equipment for cycling in public spaces; first aid equipment used during car crash responses, among others. As part of the campaign, CIFAL Madrid promotes a discussion space to disseminate concepts and critical information related to road safety, addressed kids in a friendly way.
