CIFAL Jeju hosts International Workshop on Human Security in Asia Pacific
3 – 6 April 2018, Jeju, Republic of Korea – The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Jeju (CIFAL Jeju) in partnership with the Regional Support Office of the Bali Process (RSO) hosted the workshop titled “Enhancing a Victim-Centered Approach: Identification, Assistance and Protection of Trafficking Victims in the Asia-Pacific Region” in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea.
The workshop brought together 25 representatives representing governments, NGOs and academic institutions from 13 countries of the Asia Pacific region including: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Vietnam.
The sessions were led by Mr. Kieran Butler from the Australian Embassy to Thailand, Ms. Nina Wu from Australia Department of Home Affairs, Ms. Hyun-young Chae from UNHCR Seoul, Ms. Hyejeong Yoo from IOM Seoul, Ms. Huong Thu Bui from Australia-Asia Program to Combat Trafficking in Persons, Mr. John Montilla from Kabataang Gabay sa Positibong Pamumuhay and Ms. Joyce Kim from Durebang.
Speakers and experts facilitated a dynamic discussion on topics such as identification, assistance and protection of human trafficking victims; prosecution of the traffickers in victim centered approaches; developing referral networks; monitoring and evaluation and protection checklist as well as other related topics.
Towards the end of the workshop, an action plan based on partnerships was developed by each participant. The overall presentation proved to be quite interactive and participants showed commitment to implement their respective strategies in their cities in the near future.
The last day of the workshop included a site visit to the Memorial Park which introduced the tragic historical event of Jeju and Jeju’s human security issue. At the end of the field visit, a tour of the Seong-eup Folk village and Jungmun beach took place.
