CIFAL Jeju Co-organizes International Workshop on Holistic Waste Management and Eco-Town Models for Sustainable Asia-Pacific

31 May 2015, Jeju, Republic of Korea – CIFAL Jeju convened fourteen central, state and local government officials and NGO workers from seven different countries from Asia-Pacific for a three-day workshop on "Holistic Waste Management and Eco-Town Models for Sustainable Asia-Pacific". CIFAL Jeju, in collaboration with UNEP International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC), held the event from 28 to 30 April 2015 at Jeju International Training Center.

Countries represented in the workshop included Bhutan, Cambodia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines and Thailand. The event served as a platform to build capacities in holistic waste management technologies including securing funds from ODA or EDCF projects and to share in-depth knowledge and good practices among participants. The event also provided the space for city-to-city cooperation in formulating and implementing waste management strategies.

The workshop was led by four experts on holistic waste management and ODA (or EDCF) project funds: Professor Jeong-In Kim from Chung-Ang University, Republic of Korea; Dr. Sung-gyu Kim from Hanyang University, Republic of Korea; Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Memon from UNEP IETC, Japan; and Mr. Sang-hyun Park from Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corporation, Republic of Korea.

The lecture focused on key topics including circular economy and waste management; national and city level waste management, template and guidelines, baseline for waste management strategy; Korea’s green growth policy; Korea’s sanitary landfill site management technology; and action plan to implement waste management strategy.

The workshop was highly dynamic including group discussions on the implementation of waste management strategies, collaborative exercises to formulate the most appropriate waste management technology and project fund for cities represented, city-to-city exchanges, and action plan preparation and presentation. The workshop concluded with a visit to the "Smart Grid Information Center" and "Manjanggul Cave" (UNESCO World Heritage).
