On 16 August 2011, Ms. May East, Executive Director of CIFAL Findhorn (one of the 9 UNITAR affiliated International Training Center for Local Authorities, located in Findhorn, Scotland), has been nominated as one of the 100 Global Sustain Ability Leaders by ABC Carbon, a renowned climate change consulting company, which notably produces the popular newsletter ABC Carbon Express.

The nominated Global Sustain Ability Leaders, selected from all over the world, include Nobel Prize winners, scientists, architects, designers, artists, and CEOs of international companies. Besides the well-known, there are recognized as quiet achievers who are making a name for themselves and their NGOs, institutes, universities or businesses.

May East was nominated for her continuous and firm engagement for sustainable development through capacity development activities implemented by CIFAL Findhorn since 2006. It has been one of the first CIFAL Centres to take the sustainability agenda to heart and has been excelling in putting together cutting-edge seminars, conferences and training session on the drivers and opportunities of the green growth agenda in Northern Europe, intended for a wide range of stakeholders such as representatives of local authorities, national governments, international organisations, the private sector and civil society.

CIFAL Findhorn events address the urgent implications of climate change and promote innovative solutions in the fields of low carbon economy transition, renewable energy systems, sustainable urban services and green jobs.

Together with May East, other prestigious leaders nominated include Steven Chu, the United States Secretary of Energy, a distinguished scientist and co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics (1997), or Professor Tommy Koh, President of the Third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea from 1980 to 1982, Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for and the Main Committee of the UN Conference on Environment and Development from 1990 to 1992.
