UNITAR is supporting the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to strengthen the capacities and capabilities of government officials and stakeholders outside of government to address and identify polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and manage existing sources of PCBs as well as their elimination/destruction. This issue was identified as a priority in the National Implementation Plan for Persistent Organic Pollutants (Stockholm Convention) for the Republic of Ghana.
A mission to Ghana is taking place the week of July 24 2011. The mission is another avenue for face to face interaction with Ghana EPA and other national stakeholders, in finding solutions to the PCB issues in Ghana. The mission provides an opportunity for UNITAR to understand the local challenges that our counterparts deal with on a daily basis and support their efforts in finding local solutions for PCB management in Ghana. A strategy to finalize the PCB inventory in 2011 will be also discussed and various options explored during the related workshops and meetings.
