Abyei, Sudan - The Satellite Sentinel Project (SSP) is documenting this week’s military attacks in Sudan's disputed border region of Abyei following international reports confirmed by the United Nations of bombardment and military movement.
Like previous releases, the latest reports use satellite imagery to corroborate and illustrate findings including the razing of structures north of Abyei town and the destruction of some locations in the vicinity of the town. UNOSAT has been coordinating the satellite imagery component of the Satellite Sentinel project since its inception but it does not perform all the imagery analysis presented in the reports and on the project’s website. In several instances the analysis is performed by Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) and by Digital Globe experts.
This is the case of the latest reports published on the Satellite Sentinel site on May 24-26.

About the Satellite Sentinel Project - The Satellite Sentinel Project, http://satsentinel.org, combines satellite imagery analysis and field reports with Google’s Map Maker to deter the resumption of full-scale civil war between North and South Sudan. Not On Our Watch provided seed money to launch SSP. The Enough Project contributes field reports and policy analysis, and, together with Not On Our Watch and our Sudan Now partners, pressures policymakers by urging the public to act. UNOSAT analyzes satellite images and collaborates with Google and Trellon to design the web platform. Harvard Humanitarian Initiative provides research and leads the collection, human rights analysis, and corroboration of on-the-ground reports that contextualizes the imagery. DigitalGlobe provides satellite imagery and additional analysis.
