20 August 2026, Hiroshima, JapanBalancing English-language learning with demanding work schedules can be difficult for young professionals. After observing this challenge in Iraq, UNITAR alumnus Mujtaba Abd Al - Hussain co-founded an online platform offering flexible and structured English-language learning.

The platform combines live interactive sessions, personalized exercises, individual progress tracking and structured learning pathways. Mujtaba is now working with his team to validate the platform, improve the learning experience and adapt it to the needs of Iraqi learners and young professionals.

Building Entrepreneurial Rigour Through the UNITAR Programme

To turn his vision into a sustainable enterprise, Mujtaba joined the 2025 UNITAR Resilient Ideas for Sustainable Entrepreneurship (RISE) Lab “Igniting Youth Potential through Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Economic Resilience” programme for Egypt, Iraq and Lebanon. Supported by the Government and People of Japan, the programme aimed to develop the capacity of young entrepreneurs and leaders to create and implement innovative local solutions to enhance food security and improve the private sector.

Over 500 young participants from the three countries joined the online programme. Between July and August 2025, they completed interactive online modules, expert-led webinars and peer-to-peer exchanges to develop practical skills and competencies.

The training taught Mujtaba critical frameworks in business planning, market analysis, risk management and strategic operations. Equipped with these skills, Mujtaba refined his platform’s core offering by combining live interactive sessions with personalized exercises, individual progress tracking and structured learning pathways.

The knowledge gained through UNITAR also helped me qualify for and participate in entrepreneurship programme supported by GIZ and Orange Corners Iraq, allowing me to continue developing the project and expanding my entrepreneurial skills.”

Developing the Platform

Since completing the UNITAR programme, Mujtaba has transitioned his English-learning platform from an early-stage initiative into a rapidly scaling venture. It was selected for a competitive three-month business support initiative at a leading innovation hub in Baghdad. In addition, out of hundreds of applicant start-ups across Iraq, Mujtaba secured a place in a six-month incubator to accelerate the platform’s commercial model. Building on this momentum, the team is working to expand its user base beyond national borders.

Our current focus is to validate the platform, improve the learner experience, build the most suitable solution for Iraqi learners and young professionals, and later expand across the region.”

Mujtaba’s journey demonstrates how local observation paired with structured capacity-building can transform a simple idea into a viable enterprise that drives both economic empowerment and community development.
