Training Course on Negotiation Skills and Techniques

Participants24-25 September 2018, Geneva, Switzerland - UNITAR delivered a two-day workshop on Negotiation Skills and Techniques; the first of the 4th Edition of the Executive Diploma. The workshops are executive-style face-to-face trainings focusing on international cooperation and core skills in multilateral diplomacy.

Participants of the Executive Diploma were carefully selected according to their professional profiles and motivation and are all from different sectors and backgrounds in order to diversify the audience’s perspectives and experiences. The aim of the Executive Diploma is to strengthen the capacities of diplomats, governments officials and other major actors of the diplomatic sphere, in view of actively supporting the overall efficiency of the multilateral system.

The purpose of the workshop was to enhance participant’s performance as negotiators and analyze how diplomatic negotiations are conducted. Participants learnt how to use a preparation grid for better negotiation planning, identify tensions, differences and conflicts in international setting and to facilitate the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

The workshop was delivered by Dr. Alain Lempereur, Alan B. Slifka Chair Professor at Brandeis University and the Director of the Graduate Program in Conflict Resolution and Coexistence at the Heller School for Social Policy Management. He is also an affiliated faculty and an Executive Committee Member of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.  Dr. Lempereur has been a consultant for UNITAR since 1997 and has also conducted missions for the ICRC, OECD, UNDP, WHO and the European Commission.

Participants found the workshop beneficial, with 96% of them reporting to have met the course objectives and 100% of respondents agreeing that their awareness of the subject/topic has increased.
