23 February 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – The year 2023 marks 20 years since the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Hiroshima Office was established. We thank our alumni, partners, and resource persons who supported us over the years so UNITAR could deliver innovative learning to individuals, organizations and institutions in least-developed countries, conflict and post-conflict states and fragile states. We also engage with our community in Hiroshima and other people living in Japan.

16 February 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR Division for Prosperity will hold the first in-person workshop in Japan for Great Ideas Space: Entrepreneurship for Public Health and COVID-19 Recovery in Egypt, Iraq and Lebanon. The programme trains entrepreneurs and founders of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) so they have greater knowledge, skills and networks to develop and run business projects that address challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and contribute to building a resilient health sector in their communities.

9 February 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR Division for Prosperity/Hiroshima Office will resume its in-person Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (NDNP) Training Programme in Hiroshima, Japan. The UNITAR programme gives diplomats detailed insights into the protocols and procedures of disarmament and non-proliferation conferences – such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference and meetings on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons – and builds their communication and negotiation skills.

9 February 2023, Geneva, Switzerland / Hiroshima, Japan - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), with the support of Hiroshima Prefecture, will host a virtual conference “FinTech Ecosystem: Leveraging its impact in the economy and climate change”.

23 December 2022, Hiroshima, Japan – On October 7, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) signed a collaboration and cooperation memorandum. The two institutions aim to strengthen their cooperation through development projects in entrepreneurship and digital technology

28 November 2022, Hiroshima, Japan – In early November 2022, Green Legacy Hiroshima Initiative (GLH) welcomed five plant scientists and botanic garden experts from renowned institutions in the United States to observe and study hibakujumoku, trees that survived the Hiroshima atomic bombing. The delegation consisted of Ari Novy, President and CEO of the San Diego Botanic Garden, Todd Michael and Wolfgang Busch, lead plant scientists from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Nicole Cavender, director of the Huntington Botanical Gardens, and Philip Douglas, director of global initiatives at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

22 November 2022, Djibouti, Djibouti/Hiroshima, Japan - The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Secretariat, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and with the financial support from the Government of Canada, is rolling out the Online Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy Training Programme for Women and Girls in the IGAD region.

16 September 2022, Hiroshima, Japan - Youth are invited to translate or review in their native language an online training on how artificial intelligence, or AI, affects human rights in a project co-organized by SALTO Participation & Information Resource Centre (SALTO PI), UNITAR and UNESCO. Applicants have until 26 September to apply.

13 September 2022, Hiroshima, Japan – On the 2022 International Day of Peace, 21 September, youth activists for nuclear disarmament will gather to seek breakthrough ideas towards a world free of nuclear weapons. The public is invited to the online event, which will be hosted by the UNITAR.

9 September 2022, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR Executive Director and United Nations Assistant Secretary-General Nikhil Seth recently visited Japan. The visit was to strengthen UNITAR’s partnership with the stakeholders in Japan and reaffirm our mission to develop and deliver needs-based training programmes in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
