SDG2 - ZERO HUNGER: END HUNGER, ACHIEVE FOOD SECURITY AND IMPROVED NUTRITION AND PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

A second edition of the FAO and UNITAR Joint e-Learning Course on “Trade, Food Security, and Nutrition” for Sub-Saharan African (SSA) policy decision-makers was launched in October 2019. In this Impact Story, we present the results of a survey and interviews designed to follow-up on the application of knowledge and skills from participants conducted one year after the course.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP: THE BUSINESS ENGINE TO PROMOTE THE SDGS

Two years ago when Sitra Abubaker founded her digital marketing start-up Social.ly in Ethiopia, she admits she had no educational background and no professional experience to run a business. So when a friend told her about UNITAR Division for Prosperity’s online course empowering women as entrepreneurs, she leaped at the chance.

POST-COVID: THE WORLD WE WANT TO (RE)-BUILD – THE UNITAR FUNDRAISING LECTURE SERIES

Over the past year, the corona pandemic has not only fundamentally altered individual lives, but also shaped global politics by shifting countries’ priorities. The consequences have been felt throughout the global and local economies with the effects of reverberating in society. And while the countries often combined efforts to find a vaccine have taken centre stage, other important issues such as climate change and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) have been largely side-lined.

ANTI-CORRUPTION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: BUILDING INCLUSIVE AND TRANSPARENT SOCIETIES FOR ALL

Corruption hinders sustainable development in all countries. In order to tackle its root causes and consequences as well as to find solutions for prevention, accountability and redress, the impact of mainstreaming knowledge is a powerful resource towards transforming the lives of individuals and societies, as a whole. Mainstreaming knowledge about this problematic pursues the transformation of discriminatory social institutions, laws, cultural norms and community practices, such as those limiting access to property rights or restricting access to public spaces.

SDG13 - CLIMATE ACTION: TAKE URGENT ACTION TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS IMPACT

UN CC:Learn is a partnership of 36 multilateral organizations collaborating in the development and/or delivery of climate change related learning at the global, regional and country levels. This impact story explores the impact of UN CC:Learn courses on vulnerable groups based on a survey administered to 519 participants and in-depth interviews with five people who have completed UN CC:Learn courses.

SDGS THROUGH A PEACEBUILDING LENS: MOBILISE, INSPIRE AND CONNECT

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development explicitly recognises the strong impact violence and insecurity have on development and vice versa, stating that “there can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development”. The Agenda 2030, therefore, includes peace as a cross-cutting focus area alongside four other critical areas – people, prosperity, planet, and partnerships; and has its own “peace goal”, SDG 16 of Peace, Justice and String Institutions.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOR MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES

As the past year has shown us, the new coronavirus pandemic is having unprecedented impacts across the globe, especially on human health and economic activities. In this context, Governments are intensifying their efforts to combat the global spread of COVID-19 by enacting various measures to support public health systems, safeguard the economy and to ensure public order and safety.

ONLINE TRAINING BUILDS CAPACITY OF KENYAN OFFICIALS ON CLIMATE DIPLOMACY

Climate change is recognized as a major challenge for the 21st century. New awareness, knowledge and competencies are needed across societies to be able to effectively address associated issues and negative effects. In order to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of Kenyan diplomats, government officials and civil society representatives, the Foreign Service Academy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Climate Change Directorate, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, UNITAR and UN CC:Learn joined forces to organize an Online Training Programme on Climate Change Diplomacy.

THE TV AND RADIO PROGRAMS THAT ARE CHANGING THE WAY MALAWI, ZAMBIA, AND ZIMBABWE ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE

How do we promote climate action even during a worldwide pandemic? That’s a question, that UN CC:Learn and MIET Africa asked and are trying to answer in three Southern African countries: Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Through a series of radio and TV programs called “Our Changing Climate – Our time to act!”, the two partners are raising awareness of climate change and fostering climate action in the region.

RECOVERING BETTER WITH SUGAR AND SKILLS IN GUYANA

What do sugar, cars and economic incentives have in common? They could be ingredients of a green industrial policy to reduce the environmental footprint of Guyana’s transport sector through greater use of biofuels such as ethanol derived from sugar cane. As so often though, the devil is in the details. What policies could be adopted to link economic and environmental considerations? How can a government account for international legal frameworks when designing green industrial policies?

TRAINING OF TRAINERS EQUIPS PROFESSIONALS IN WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES TO ADVANCE E-LEARNING ON CLIMATE CHANGE

UN CC:Learn and the Partnership for Action on Green Economy delivered a four-session online training of trainers to participants in 13 countries of the West African hub. In total, 17 professionals, mostly working within the academia field, have been trained on development and delivery of e-learning courses.

SDGs IN ACTION

In response to the current situation, UNITAR, along with UNDESA and the UNFCCC organized a series of webinars since last December on three topics respectively: “making the case for integrated climate SDG Action”, “how to maximize climate & SDG synergies – identifying opportunities and navigating trade-offs” and “overcoming constraints to implement climate & SDG synergies – capacity, financing and monitoring.” These three webinars have not only attracted a wide range of audiences both within and beyond the UN system, but they’ve also demonstrated UNITAR’s determination and dedication to further advance the progress of SDG, despite the disruptions of the situation.
