COMMUNITY-LED APPROACH: THE FOUNDATION OF PEACEBUILDING

UNITAR has long since understood the value of bottom-up approach and has therefore endeavored to support local partners through promoting and enhancing local peace processes, knowledge sharing, capacity-building and providing up-to-date methodology on peace-related topics to local partners across various projects. Community-led projects have demonstrated that it is imperative to build confidence among people through direct work with communities and their members in the field.

ON A MISSION FOR PEACE IN SOUTH SUDAN

In a country that has gone through multiple wars and conflicts in past decades, it is not easy to create consensus around peacebuilding, get buy-in from citizens and advance it, even drop by drop. Chol Gatkek Tut, Acting Director General for Peace and Social Cohesion, Ministry of Peacebuilding of South Sudan, has been striving to bring people together since she was a teenager.

The Philippines has been committed to and takes pride in its agreement to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The Philippines does not own nor possess and is not in control of nuclear weapon despite its maritime vulnerability as an archipelago. Diane Shayne Lipana, Third Secretary of the Philippine Mission to the United Nations in New York, confirms the Philippines’ stance on prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons. She represents the Philippines on the United Nations General Assembly First Committee, which deals with disarmament and international security issues.

BUSINESS FOR PEACE: THE ROLE OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR IN BUILDING PEACE

On the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, which theme this year is “People Peace Progress: The Power of Partnerships”, let’s look into the pivotal yet underexplored relationship between peace and the private sector. Considering a rich practical experience from private sector development in complex and fragile environments, this piece will argue that through conscious engagement and active dialogue promotion business has an important role for both economic development and stabilization efforts in fragile contexts.

GLOBAL INTER-GANGWON COOPERATION NETWORK VISITED UNITAR AND THE PALAIS DES NATIONS, SIGNED MOU

UNITAR's Division for Multilateral Diplomacy was honored to receive a visit from a delegation of the Global Inter-Gangwon Cooperation Network, sponsored by the Government of Gangwon last month on 16 May 2022. Located between North and South Korea, the Gangwon Province and the Global Inter-Gangwon Cooperation Network aim at the establishment of a "peace zone'' for tourism and industrial development in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and seek international support for this endeavor.

The NYO has been collaborating with organizations associated with the UN System to foster and enhance the goals of the UN through programs and events in particular the pillar of peace. The teachings and programs of UNITAR have influenced several UN Members.

BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS FOR SUSTAINABLE PEACE AND DEMOCRACY

Democracy has often been considered as one of the durable systems for building sustainable peaceful and inclusive societies, especially societies experiencing deep socio-political divisions. In most countries undergoing political transitions, these transitions may be triggered by various factors in a bid to change the prevailing political and constitutional order.

AGENCY-BASED EMPOWERMENT AND WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP FOR PEACE

It is well known that peace cannot be achieved without the meaningful participation of all members of society, including its most vulnerable members and those most affected by the consequences of armed conflict. It has also long been established by frameworks such as United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and the subsequent resolutions that make up the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda that conflict has a disproportionate effect on women and girls and that increasing the number of women who lead and contribute to peace processes improves both the quality and durability of peace
