The world is still in shock about how the military disengagement of the West and the implosion of the Afghan government led to the Taliban victory, taking full control over almost the entire territory of Afghanistan within days. Many civilian endeavours of international assistance operating under a military umbrella ceased their operations. Beyond the chaotic and heart-breaking pictures during the international evacuation operation until August 31, we are focused on the humanitarian crisis in which the Afghan people find themselves.

IMPROVING CLIMATE CHANGE PREPAREDNESS FOR COP26

The current global pandemic highlighted how training to build resilience is more critical than ever. For the past 18 months, the Covid-19 crisis and its consequences have been the primary concern of world leaders and government officials. However, this poses the risk of overshadowing yet another existential challenge, which requires immediate attention and action. In light of the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UNITAR, the UN Resident Coordinator's Office for Mauritius and Seychelles, the Group of 77, and China implemented a series of e-Workshops on Climate Change Diplomacy to support the educational development of delegates and representatives.

BUILDING RESILIENCE BY HAVING AN INCLUSIVE DISASTER RISK REDUCTION PLAN

Like the large Haiti earthquake on 14 August 2021 that caused many casualties, natural disasters occur suddenly, threatening people’s lives and property. Earthquakes, tsunamis, floods and typhoons – disasters are hard to avoid and directly affect survivors as well as people from the most vulnerable positions in society. However, by weighing the risks beforehand and developing a disaster preparedness plan that is inclusive of women and children, older people and people with disabilities and preparing the community, it is possible to reduce the damage.

HACKATHON - STRENGTHENING RURAL AND URBAN RELATIONSHIPS WHILE ACHIEVING THE SDGS

The online Hackathon by UNITAR and Franklin University Switzerland "Food as a nexus for synchronic urban and rural development" offered a platform to generate innovative ideas to rethink and improve food as a linkage for development in rural and urban areas. The Hackathon poses three challenges to build resilience to food shortages and environmental distress for international participants to team-up and propose innovative solutions: i) Re-naturalizing cities; ii) Empowering the rural youth through food security and resilience; and iii) Bridging the gap between food availability and pricing in urban and rural areas.

ENHANCING CAPACITIES ON FINANCIAL INCLUSION THROUGH ONLINE COURSES

The AGFUND and UNITAR launched a Global Learning Platform on Financial Inclusion in October 2019. The initiative aims to enhance capacities on financial management and financial inclusion by facilitating online courses and e-workshops. This Impact Story reveals how participants from the online courses have used the newly acquired knowledge to support their communities and local challenges and build resilience. Participants’ stories highlight the creation of initiatives for financial inclusion that have led to crops diversification managed by women in Kenya, financial assistance to vulnerable groups from the informal sector in Guinea to improve their management capacity and incorporation of risk management plans in financial analysis for microfinance institutions in Ghana.

UNITAR AND SSK CORPORATION TEAM UP IN JAPAN FOR SPORTS AND PEACE

We are pleased to announce that UNITAR and Japanese sporting goods company SSK Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the use of sports as a medium of peace and understanding. SSK created a soccer jersey donning the UNITAR logo, and the jerseys were worn by the soccer players during the “Peace Match” held in Hiroshima on 7 August 2021.
