The UNITAR "Iraq Entrepreneurship and Leadership Youth Training Programme" is a fellowship initiative that provides youth with hard and soft skills in entrepreneurship and leadership to develop or strengthen local businesses. This Impact Story reveals how participants have incorporated technological solutions to tackle local challenges by applying the knowledge from the fellowship programme such as transferring knowledge on community management, creating a digital platform that connects real estate agents and governmental associations, introducing a mobile application that provides food and water delivery services and using digital communication strategies to promote campaigns for water preservation.

IMPACT STORY: TRAINING YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN SOUTH SUDAN ON LEADERSHIP AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILLS

UNITAR initiated the “Entrepreneurship and Leadership Youth Training Fellowship Programme” in South Sudan in 2015 to improve leadership and entrepreneurship capacities of young professionals in the country. Feedback from participants of the 2015-2019 cycles indicate how improved knowledge on organizational needs assessment (ONA) has led to interesting projects to bridge the digital divide. When talking to Hakim Monykuer Awuok he explained that he has promoted a digital library project, an offline repository that contains the textbooks used in South Sudanese schools in his region.

LEARNING WITH VR TECHNOLOGY: TRANSCENDING TIME AND PLACE

Using 3D goggles, we can now enjoy the immersive thrills of movies, games, and amusement parks. Virtual reality (VR) is no longer a new technology of the distant future but is becoming a familiar tool, and UNITAR is harnessing it to bring vivid, visceral learning across time and space.

The COVID-19 crisis greatly changed UNITAR’s training programmes. Trainees and instructors may not be able to move around because of the pandemic, but training needs have in some ways dramatically increased. To meet the needs of trainees from all over the world, UNITAR introduced online learning.

UNOSAT BECOMES THE UNITED NATIONS SATELLITE CENTRE

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted a historic resolution for UNITAR, and in particular for its Operational Satellite Applications Programme - UNOSAT. On the occasion of its 75th Session, the Economic and Social Council, one of the six main organs of the United Nations, approved resolution E/2021/L.22 on UNITAR as facilitated by Guatemala. Following the recommendation by the UN Secretary-General in his report to the Council, this resolution recognizes UNOSAT as the United Nations Satellite Centre.

SECOND EDITION OF THE “ONLINE CERTIFICATE ON ESSENTIAL PROFESSIONAL SKILLS”
